One area I have to raise is Does your insurance company cover your Jeep when it's off road?
About 4 years ago I was shopping for an insurance company to cover all my needs.
I contacted the local agents (in Mpls, MN) from Allstate, Farmers, a couple other nation companies and State Farm. One of my direct questions was If I had my Jeep on an off-road trail, no where near a typical road, and was in an accident. Would I be covered? Every company rep told me NO. I would not be covered off-roading my Jeep. Except State Farm they said, yes you would be covered, just as if I was on the road or on my own propriety. So I went with State Farm. I not saying this to promote State Farm, Just ask the question. Make sure you get this in writing from your company.

What happens when your talking to your friend 20 feet from you 4x4. Your 4x4 sitting on a hill slips, gains speed and hits someone? They end up sueing you to cover medical, you loose the 4x4 and a lot more! Not saying this to bring everyone down, but at $40+ a month I'll take insurance to cover what I can't plan.
49 Willysman 01-14-2002, 08:21 PM i will try state farm
Glenn 01-14-2002, 10:22 PM I just switched to State Farm too... I had been with NATIONWIDE since 1986. When I got the 85 runner, I called to add it to my policy. They asked me if it had been modified in any way. I told em it had a mild suspension lift (which it does, Superlift). They told me flat out that they would not insure it cause it had been modified. Period, end of conversation. I called back and got a different person and got the same result. I tried to argue that I had been a good paying customer for all these years and had not had a single claim and they told me, in no uncertain terms, that I was SOL.... That really pissed me off so I contacted my State Farm agent who I have homeowners with and asked about the suspension lift. No problem at all. I switched. :flipoff: Nationwide can KMA... Gotta have insurance. Maybe State Farm costs a little more but I'm sure as hell done with Nationwide... Hmmmph! Fine way to treat a long time customer.
Glenn, Im pretty sure you qualify, check with USAA. Their banking these days has problems so I woudlnt deal with them in that manner.. but I still have no problem with their insurance in either price or customer service.

We'd been with Farmer's for a long time.. 10 years? 15? something like that.
At the time, we had two houses and probably 6 or 7 rigs, plus other stuff.
I went down to insure my "race Scout" - I'd just put a new motor in it and wanted to break it in around town first.
It's street legal - barely. I have wipers, no windshield, headlights, brake lights, rearview mirror, and arm signals. :D
I'd had it insured the previous summer when I first built it (with the stock motor) with the same company, but let it lapse over the winter.
I'm in my agent's office and off-handedly mentioned that I only wanted it insured for a few months, since it's a summer only rig, since it has no roof...
DANGER!
"You mean you cut it off???"
"No, it's called a convertible. The factory sold them without roofs."
I mentioned something about a rollbar and safety equipment.. more bells and whistles went off.
The interrogration proceeded to "modification" questions..
"Does it have a lift?" "Pardon?" "Does it have the stock suspension"
...thinking..
"No, it has the stock springs" (SOA, but..)
"Does it have oversize tires?"
...thinking...
"No, it has stock tires" (Unless I'm racing, it sits on some dry rotted 235/75-15s in the driveway... the race tires are too expensive to burn up on pavement)
And on and on.. I finally got my insurance.
Meanwhile, right outside the agent's window, was my trail rig. 4" lift, 33s, soft-top, rollbar.. RIGHT THERE.
Two months later we got a letter from Farmer's about various things "wrong" around the house which amounted to too much risk to leave it be, and too much risk to make corrections, so they dropped us...
... and we took the two houses and all the cars and everything else to another company. :flipoff:
Would you believe they called my trail rig an "Attractive Nuisance"? ...and my spare parts "Junk"???!
Another interesting tid bit from Farmer's.. racing is not covered.
Duh.
Not only is it not covered, but if you EVER race your rig, your policy is Null and Void then and there.
Drive your Geo to the dragstrip, run the 1/4, and you're not covered on the way home.
Of course, when I got billed for the rest of my insurance payment on my "race" Scout I called 'em up and said, "I thought this policy was canceled - you see, about a month after I was in your office I took it racing, and you said my policy was void..."
Yeah, suddenly it became, "Well, we don't go around following you just in case..." blah blah... and, BTW, we still want our money. :D
So to tie this back in to the question about trail-coverage..
I bet most policies feel the same about "off-roading" as they do about "racing"..
HOWEVER. It's important to note that we almost NEVER go "off-roading".. we go TRAIL RIDING. Cross-country travel has been pretty much eliminated in most of the US.
As such, you are always on a road or trail. It may be a "primitive" road, but it's a road/trail/route.
So, technically, you're just "off-highway" not "off-road" :D
crashinaz 01-15-2002, 02:44 PM Rolled my 4Runner off-road a month or so ago... I've got full coverage with Progressive and I thought, "Oh boy, here we go... They're going to try to pull some "Off-Road or Modification Clause" out on me." Called them up the next day and told them exactly what happened, got a claim number, adjuster called me by the end of the day, they towed it to a bodyshop the next day, and came back with the word that it was a total loss by that evening... I was astonished!!! We negotiated my pay-off and buy-back the next day and they were ready to cut the check... Only thing left for me to do was have the title switched to "salvage" status and give them a copy.
BTW- They even added some $ in for the lift and tires. :p
Cutter 01-15-2002, 03:44 PM I use state farm. Got full replacement if stolen, and I don't mention trail damage and they don't ask:D Last summer I rear ended a guy in a new ford pu, I didn't have to pay a deductable and my premiums didn't go up. (and it didn't even ding my Jeep!, my winch fairlead caught him dead center in the tailgate, $864 damage to him):smokin:

Yup, same here. State farm payed off when I rolled and totaled
my previous Jeep off-road. Yes, they knew it was off-road.

coyote 01-15-2002, 07:28 PM State Farm here too....when I went to get insurance the looked it over and told me to get an appraisal for full coverage and insisted that they got to have a ride in it....mines only theft, fire, or other but I state no body damage of any kind will be reported!
SMART ASS 01-15-2002, 07:52 PM sounds like State Farm's ins is the way to go...
Curtis 01-15-2002, 10:15 PM Cool. I'll have to ask my agent. I've been with State Farm since the mid 80's. For just basic coverage, I only pay $17 a month on the Scout and $18.50 on the Bronco II. My renter's insurance is actually more at $20. I should be able to squeeze out a few more $$ to get total on the Scout.
Nobody 01-15-2002, 10:28 PM I've had state farm since I started driving. My bronco was insured 10 years ago when it was still stock. I've never made a claim. I've been wondering how state farm would react if I had an accident. Sounds like I'll be ok. I've been scared to ask for fear of not finding insurance elsewhere.
Through the years, I've talked to a few sales people from other insurance companies. They spend 20 minutes conviencing me to switch, then I mention off-road, .........click
49 Willysman 01-16-2002, 07:49 PM I whent with state farm and i got full coverage on my 49 willys and 1994 toyota 4x4 plus renters insurance for 107 amonth :) i am happy as hell !! he even came to the house was a cool dude easy goin fast and he was gone oh he liked the rig also :)
TEAM X-TREME 01-16-2002, 09:26 PM No this is not Bone Collector, It's the shorter, cuter other half. Just Kidding!!! I am an insurance agent here in Redding and we go through Progressive only because I have been with them for a long time. They wouldn't cover the Toyota for what it was worth unless we paid a fortune, but you have to do what you have to do. If we were to not tell them about the mods. they could deny any claims if there was an incident. If they ask if it is modified and you say no and there is a claim than you're screwed. So if any body has any questions just ask.My name is Renee......::::usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa: By the way does anybody have any pics at 4th of July 2001 of our truck?
49 Willysman 01-17-2002, 12:05 PM i was there and got alot of pics whats the truck look like and ill post some pics for you//..

mountain bronco 01-17-2002, 09:06 PM Here is my insurance story
1 1/2 weeks ago my wife spun, ran off the road and rolled our 99' TJ on stock tires, but 4" lift 1" body. I had the stock size tires on because they are studded, theory WAS studded tires would keep her out of trouble therefor wasn't worried about stability... shot that to hell.
Damage
waves in the driver side panels
broken mirror
cracked hardtop
bent flares
busted window on hardtop
Bent front dana 30
broke upper driver side control mount
total adjuster said was $9100
Insurance writes a check....
I put the soft top on.
Order currie 9" arb front
atlas 3.8
drive shafts
belly up pan
detroit and 4.56 gears for the rear
powertank, mount, arb adapter, heavy duty line
spare axle shafts
yada yada yada
Don't fix body damage and I have sweet trail rig now...
Thank god for insurance! (ONE BEACON)
Adjuster doesn't even question lift, but I did get a quote on a replacement dana 30 for the estimate, not the 9 inch
I wish my wife would do this more often (hey shes ok!)
Howard
