All right, looking for some help... I'm about to start my power steering conversion for my 77fj40... I don't plan on running anything bigger than 34x9.50 tires so I'm going with the mini truck power steering box, however I would like to use a Saginaw power steering pump... What pumps do you GURU's recommend? What year, or part number Saginaws should I be looking for?
Thanks in advance for all of the help....

I usually ran pumps off of a late 60's-early 70's big-block Olds. They were way over boosted, I could turn my 39's with one finger, even aired down to about 4 psi.

Find a 60 series wagon and grab the whole steering set from that. It works great, it'sToyota made and gets rid of the center arm and all the other BS. Great setup and pretty easy to boot!

David:
I've got a couple write-ups on my site on PS conversions.
Pumps: From what I've researched, there are few if any differences in pumps. And, even if there was, boosting volume and pressure is quite easy....see the writeup at westtexasoffroad.com
Even a basic pump will have no problems with 34x9.5 tires.
I HAVE been told that the pumps on Wagoneers from the 70's are a higher boost pump. No rebuilders seem to be able to confirm however.

Look for a steering box out of a late 60's or 70's intage chevy/pontiac sedan. I was told to, and did get one with the casting number 5691676 on top. This is the four bolt 4.25 turn lock to lock variety that is most desirable. I haven't done my conversion yet so I can't tell you much else. Check out the tech section on woody's site for all kinds of links to conversion info- it has been a big help to me. Good Luck

If you are going to use the mini truck box, it will be fine for 34" tires. We just put together a setup for a '78 FJ40 and it has 35" tires. No problem with the box. The JTOutfitters saginaw pump is a good match for the box, BUT their mount noticibly misaligns the pump pulley in relation to the plane the other pulleys operate in. This causes noticble belt squeal under load we just cant get rid of, even after shimming it as close as we could get. I would use the Toyota pump and fab some brackets using the smog pump mount or the stock mount FJ60/late FJ40 pump. If you can find other company that makes a saginaw mount that is better that is an option as well. Just my $.02

I would deffinately recmend a saginaw pump w/ any box, toyota or saginaw. I have had nothing but trouble w/ stock toyota pumps. right now I have a saginaw pump on my fj60 w/ a stock box & it turns 35's w/ no trouble. The last 5 toyota pumps I had ALL had trouble & most leaked!!
