: What is this "ScoutII D44's are weak" crap?
IndyCJ 01-15-2002, 05:52 AM Yea, I'm a CJ guy, and I'm building up a 76 CJ5.
I was fortunate enough to find a D44 rearend from a ScoutII in the junkyard, clean it up, put it in, and then I see this....
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum....=24930 (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24930)
Are they weak? I'm gonna be running 36" Swampers, 5.38 gears, and a spool.
Should I truss it? Where can I get one? (I looked at 4wheelparts, and some other places, and can't find a truss specifically for an IH)
Last question.
Looking at the TSM rear disk brake conversion..... It doesn't appear that it retains the stock 5x5.5 bolt pattern? or does it?
Thanks dudes!

A bunch of faucking newbies!
IndyCJ 01-15-2002, 06:16 AM Yea, that's kind of what I thought too. I mean, POR has the tendancy to make you think that no matter what you put in your rig, it's too weak, but I had never heard that one before. :mad3:
And it never fails. As soon as I go one way, somebody says it's junk. :D
Old Scout 01-15-2002, 06:23 AM 118" wb Terra when loaded for trips pushes 6500lbs and runs 33"s. It has seen a ton ( years) of high speed in Baja. Yea Steve bent the axle when he jumped it fully loaded at 50 mph. We think it was all the leverage from the heavy ass Honda XR600 ( +500lbs) strapped to the rear bumper.
You will be fine.

Yep. They're about as weak as every other semi-float Dana 44 rear end. :flipoff2:
Mine's probably slightly bent from abuse.. but so what? My Scout weighs more than your CJ.
I haven't broken an axle shaft yet. Lost a semi-float bearing once, bent the axle flange once, but I've never broken one.
If you're concerned, truss it. Don't buy one, make one. :D Or better yet, have a buddy make one. :)
My '72 Travelall weighs about 5300lbs (lighter than I thought) with a Dana 44 rear end. So far so good even with a 392V8, 33x12.50s, and towing about 6,000lbs of loaded car trailer.

I think there's a TSM kit that retains the stock 5 on 5.5 pattern.
You could also roll your own with F150 rotors, Chevy calipers, and weld on/bolt-on caliper brackets..

Gee and I wonder why I don't go the Heep section often. Fully agree with the other guys, it'll live. If the 44's survive under the Scouts, it'll live a long happy life in a light weight Heep.
Yes the TSM kit retains the 5x5.5 pattern, but don't waste the $500.00 on the kit. Do a search for Stock Car Parts, or something to that effect, the site sells brackets for calipers, do as Tom suggested grab a rotor from a Ford, (hat type), buy the bracket for the a GM truck caliper, weld it, add new flex lines and your done. Then add a line lock or t-case mounted e-brake. The TSM kits uses Caddy calipers, the e-brake is WORTHLESS!!

No shit. :D It never ceases to amaze me who pops in. I guess it's my fault though, for questioning that shit. I should know better.
Joe V 01-15-2002, 02:38 PM Weak links:
The spot weld where the axle tubes are pressed into the housing occasionally break under too much torque along with a spring perch weld.
IMHO if you run 36's with stock 30 spliner shafts, you will eventually want to upgrade to warn shafts or a 35 spline 60 after you twist a spline or two.
ahhhh...the continuing saga of upgrading axles.:smokin:

I forgot to add that.
I, too, have broken a spring perch off.
I broke the welds on one perch and bent the other one.
That was a good day of wheelin'. :D :D

yes, but those were the stock perchs, and they can be renforced, and the tube spot-weld, that can happen with any diff.... not saying it doesn't happen, but I have not heard of it being a "problem" with "Scout" D44's only......
I *have* heard that the thinner tubes "can" bend more than a thicker tube... but duh!
I's say go for it Indy, I've never had a problem, in my *heavy* scout, nore have *I* heard that is it a magor concern/issue.
My only concern with your plan is the 5.38's, I've been told that is a SMALL pinion, and could be a week point in a rearend.... but hey, with the light heep... it with probably work just fine.
go for it.

Chief yelling alot 01-15-2002, 04:36 PM yup that right Scout axels=week dont bother finding a prfetly good scout and striping it down just for it's axels for your heep. Scout axels = bad nwes
find somthing ele like a 03 Jeep 44s :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Shadow man 01-16-2002, 12:35 AM I have broken the ring and pinions on a rear 44, but not the axles. Now I break the axles in my 70, and not the ring and pinion!:(

Don't worry Chief, the Scout's been sitting in the junkyard for at least 10 years (at least that's about when I remember the first time seeing it). I would hardly call it "perfectly good". :flipoff2:
What are you talking about 03 Jeep 44's? That POS Rubicon thing that DC is building? Yea, right.
That's all "us" Jeepers needs, more Bolt-on-bitches on the trails complaining that the dealer hasn't installed their bumper correctly. :mad3:

Sounds like someone is ready for a Binder, aint much bolt on there. Sell the heep, buy two binders (one for parts) and wheel it, you'll never be happier.

well thats makes me feel a little beter.
but is still anuther Scout down the drane:( :( :crybaby2: :crybaby2:
Brian E 01-17-2002, 08:39 PM I have a scout rear in my cj, with a 360 V-8, and 36's. Mine hasn't held up all that well, but it has been though hell. I broke one rear shaft, and bent the drivers side tube. Then I competed in the Warn event, and twisted both sides. I repalced them, and have since twisted one more. All stock shafts. I am very careful on the throttle, but it only sees really nasty wheelin'.
On the other hand Jason Paule has a Scout rear in his early Bronco. His dad used the axle in his two wheel drive racecar in the late 70's, then in his sand drag car before Jason swapped it into the Bronco. For the last 5 years it has had 35" boggers, and opened tons of the toughest trails around. (the same trails I run) He has never had a single problem with it. Explain that!!
I think I need to swap him rears while he isn't lookin!!!!
