: Radio Location in FJ40
gengen 01-15-2002, 09:19 AM I've have had my '71 FJ40 Hardtop for a while now. It is pretty stock as best I can tell and has never had a radio/stereo/speakers installed. What are recommendations for location for basic AM/FM radio (with cassette or CD) and speakers? I have the column 3-Speed and bench seat, so no room for a center console setup. I see a lot of room in the glovebox but hate to loose that storage room.
rabid 01-15-2002, 10:27 AM Doesn't matter. You'll never hear it over the swampers at speed.
Tuffy makes an overhead console that may work if you have a cage. Try their website. aside from that, it is the gloveox or cut into the dash.
BigRedFJ40 01-15-2002, 10:32 AM Cut the dash out where the ash tray is.......it is the perfect height, it just needs to be legnthed. as far as speakers..... mount them in the back on the wheel wells:D
GloNDark 01-15-2002, 10:45 AM I put my JVC cd player in the glove box.
Good: Less dust, doesnt' get water or mud splashed on it and nice and clean when the door is closed.
Bad: Pain in the ass to change CDs on the trail (Open door, lean way over, eject, new CD and close door) lost of some glove box space.
The good for me out weighs the bad that's for sure. I will post pics tonight.
The glove box sounds like a good location for a stereo. This way you can save the factory radio location (if older ones have the space in the dash) for small gauges.
I think I put my CB in the ash tray location and put 2 small 2 1/16" gauges in the factory radio location.
BigRedFJ40 01-15-2002, 11:01 AM I think that I would put the CB in the glove box and the radio in the dash. Which one are you goona use more? I say it's a matter of convienence to have the radio right there in front of you. The glove box is a pain in the cock.
just my .02 worth.....
I agree with you, but since I don't have a radio I thought that would be better for me. Not that I really nead one with all the noise the 2F and swampers make :D
BigRedFJ40 01-15-2002, 11:14 AM I can't agree more about the noise level. Between the swampers howling and the sound of a stroked 2F with minimal exhaust.....The tunes are usless at highway speeds......:smokin:
Sloan 01-15-2002, 01:25 PM I just took the radio out of my FJ 40 and put it in the FJ60. Couldn't hear the damn thing between no top, BFG mudders and the highway noise from the 2F and the regular groaning and creaking.:D Thanks for the idea of gauges in the radio slot.:D
The Jerk 01-15-2002, 02:09 PM cd player in center consol along with my rockford amp, 2 10's behind the seats and 2 6x9's all teh way in teh back bolted to cage and 2 5 1/4 sepretes under dash where heater use to be, it WAILS! jiMMy
Jimmy likes the cars that go boom. :D
Mr McGee 01-15-2002, 04:32 PM On my 74, the radio spot is cut out on the dash where the radio would be on the newer 40's. looks like it's supposed to be there...i also put an oil and ammeter guage in the ash tray location with a back plate over the opening. Kenwood cd player gets a little dusty though...i would recommend the little flip-up bubble/dome covers meant for boat stereos--like 30 bucks.
nuclearlemon 01-15-2002, 07:26 PM can't say as i remember when i had a 40 series with a radio...i kinda like the sound of the engine whining (yes, even the lowly f motors are better than dribble and commercials). i bought one of the tuffy overheads for the current 40 over a year ago. still haven't installed it...can't say i'm too pleased with the quality in comparison to the price paid though...kinda rattley and piss poor setup for cb mike.
60seriesguy 01-16-2002, 08:52 AM How about a Tuffy center console? They make a model that has a separate, lockable front compartment for a radio or CB, my friend Ross has one of these on his FJ40 and it kicks ass!!
I got a Tuffy console without the separate compartment and consider it to be one of the top mods I ever did to the Cruiser. It triplicated the amount of storage space over the stock console (still not enough, but getting there), is lockable, comes with two REAL cup holders and functions as padded armrest. I can't say enough about it, I love it.
Cheers!
Mr McGee 01-16-2002, 01:32 PM dont mean to shoot you down 60, but gengen has a bench seat.:D but i do agree with you, the center consoles are nice.
nuclearlemon 01-16-2002, 03:59 PM he said he had a bench seat so no room for the center console...only thing with the confer is that you need to drill holes where the radio is to help keep it from overheating.
1970cruiser 01-17-2002, 03:33 PM I agree, get the tuffy overhead console and it will hold your CB and radio. It will attach to your front and center hoop of your rollbar above your head. It also locks so it is secure when you have the top off and are at the grocery store. No coming back to wires hanging out of the dash.:mad3:
