: third member puzzle!

How do I get my rear third member apart, it has 4:88 gears and an air locker. The problem is the block won't come out because it hits the larger 4:88 ring gear. When it went together the first time there was just enough room to tap the C clips in with the block in place, now I need to remove the block to get the C-clips out but I'm not sure how. I thought about taking a die grinder to the ARB housing removing enough material to turn the block sideways to get it out. Before I do this I just want to know if anybody else has a better solution.

if you can get the cross shaft out the block should move laft or right far enough to push every thing that way and take out 1 c-clip then pull axle push spacer block over to other side and repeat. I have heard that you have to grind a little on the ring gear to get shaft in and out( sometimes.) It happens with 4.?? and up. I have heard both ways with 4.88's , it clears just barely and I had to grind a little.. so you might get lucky and be able to slide cross shaft out with no grinding. if you have to grind use tinfoil to cover all parts so debris does not get in.

crosspin first, then the block....it may be a trick, but it outta come free...it got in there somehow...lol

I had to grind a third of the shaft to get it to clear the gear in order to get the block in when I first put it together. I did not like doing that but so far it has not exploded on me.
So I can push the shaft out of my way and take the block and move it around but it hits the gear when I try and remove it.
What Peesalot said it basically what I did to get the c -clips in, but removing them is not as easy.

There has to be at least somebody besides me that has had this problem.

hate to say it, but you need a new crosspin anyways. "proper" installation would take down a small portion of one ring gear tooth to allow a complete crosspin to work, weakening only an insignificant part of the ring gear at one small spot, rather than a crosspin that's relied on for strength at everypoint of it's operation.

Should be no issue with "rounding" the edges of the block to remove it....however, since the edge that needs to be rounded is on the ring side, there will be almost no way to get anything in there to do it.

You have the pin completely removed, correct?

I needed that advice about 2 years ago!!

No the pin is not removed. I had only ground 1/3 of the diameter about 2 inches down on the pin. This allowed me to push the pin down far enough to get the block in. I can'nt get the pin out without taking the gear off.
Like you said theres probably no way of grinding the gearside of the block at this point. Would grinding the edge off the arb housing to allow the block to come out more at an angle weaken the housing to much?

grind the freakin ring gear like you should have 2 years ago, get new shaft when you put it back together to replace the one you ground . What do you mean " that's the way I put it tigether , but it's harder to take them out."
Bottom line is you just admitted that they will come out with the block in there and the cross shaft out. Get a magnet and pull em out. no more posts til it's done. please post pics of the shaft you ground on , I would like to see it. I took my arb apart like 3 times and it is a pain but you get used to it and it seems easy now. I had the most trouble with the cross shaft retaining pin. busted off the little removal tool , threads stuck in pin. try that one out if you think getting the c-clips out is hard...

I think the point is ... "...take down a small portion of one ring gear tooth to allow a complete crosspin to work...". This works for removal as well as install. Pin comes out, block moves to allow room for c-clip removal as described above somewhere.

Pics would help a great deal.

I have my 3rd member out right now with 4.88s rear of 1 tooth ground. I can probably get a pic tomorrow night if you've got the time to wait. I like using a dremel with a sanding drum. Slower than some methods but still only like 10 or 15 minutes work. You don't remove too much material and it's pretty smooth when it's done. I still hit mine with some 200 and then 400 grit to make it very smooth.

I will dig around for a shot of my 5.29 gear set. Its almost missing a whole tooth to clear that *%&$^&* ARB cross pin. DON’T grind your ARB housing, no need and it would be a fast way to void all future help from the boys in Seattle. (ARB)

I know the pain on getting those freeken c clips in with that small window and the LG ring gear in the way. It took a buddy to do it since I was loosing my mind over it, bike spoke with the clips on double back tape + flashlight got them in. Ug. The plan is to never tough them again until I put my Mogs under the truck.
