: bogger vs swamper
chevota 01-15-2002, 10:15 AM I am runing a q-78 swamper and looking into going taller but the width is a consern. the narrower tire seem to do better here in the ozark foothills. I've been thinking about running a 38.5 11.00 16 bogger but have heard that the lugs don't stick out as far. So to help in my quest for a new tire I thought i'd let the por board help me out with witch to run and why.
BroncoGlenn 01-15-2002, 11:18 AM Do you need much in the way of side to side traction? Boggers are great for pulling you forward through and over most anything, tend to slip sideways off of rocks and such where the swampers hold better.
Rubicrawler 01-15-2002, 11:25 AM Have you considered the 38x12.5x15 TSL SX's? Great tire with good lateral stability. Either way, you can't go wrong with TSL products.
My experience in mud is that the 38.5X11 Bogger bites harder than just about anything going. I'm running Q78 TSL's now (have to keep 'em under 36"), and had 38X12.50's before. These are better than the 12.50 wides by a long shot, not quite as good as 34X9.50's, and not quite as good as those narrow Boggers. I'd have to say the 38.5X11 is every bit as wide as a Q78.

dirtrod 01-15-2002, 06:47 PM 38.5x11.00 boggers are a great tire, you'll love them.
Bill Collins 01-15-2002, 07:01 PM i also can not make up my mind on what tire to get.i have the QR buckshot mudders right now, almost wore out they maesure about 34.5 in.tall.i like the narrow tires too, they work so much better down here in the mud we have.i wanted the 38.5x11 boggers, but they might be a little to tall.i may just get the 38x12.50 tsl.the tsl is alot cheaper and alittle shorter,so that is what i might get next...
chevota 01-16-2002, 06:01 AM just in my type of terrain I've noticed that the 12.50 don't do as well as the narrow tires like a q-78 or a 34x9.50 If you want a killer tire at a 34 higth I'd say hands down 34x9.50 swamper It has a diff tread design than a normal tsl the side lugs stick out father and the cener lugs aren't as big and seem to have a better bite.
My ? mainly had to do with how well the 38.5x11 bogger did because I have never seen one in person and havn't heard of any one runing them to tell me there opion on them. I like the higth of the q and its not but 10.0 wide so it still narrow enough for me but like tex said the 34x9.50 does better climbing and the like but I can runn creeks better with the q-78 because or the extra clearance it gives me. Hoping that the narrow bogger will do as well or better at finding traction as the 34x9.50
I'd just like to see a 38.5x11 bogger mounted up near my truck. I can't get the shop in town to even talk to me about them and I'll be DAMNED if I'm gonna order them just tell if they will fit or not. I really like the narrow width, my trucks wide enough as it is. I've got 36x12.5's on 8" rims now and love it. Just need something a little taller.

You might also look at the R85 Buckshot. It's about the same diameter as the 38X12.50 TSL, but perhaps a bit skinnier. And the tread is the same as the Q78 Buckshot (with the same 28/32's depth :smokin: ).

Yeah, I needed a bit more clearance since we run deep mud, plus the Q78 works better with my gear ratio. Otherwise, 34's would have been my next tire instead of these. But, these were a big improvement over the 38X12.50's. And I have a couple of fellow racers who had 34's before Q78's & they think the Q's are better overall (because of the height) compared to the 34's, even if they don't bite QUITE as hard.

chevota 01-16-2002, 10:08 AM i heard that buckshot doesn't make an r any more or I would considered that tire also.
How well does the 38.5 bogger bite compared to the 34 swamper any ideas or feed back

You never see that R85 advertised, but I know last time I checked it was still available. I know guys that buy a new set every season for their mud racers (more dedicated than me LOL).
In straight-line mud on a flat surface, nothing bites harder than the 38.5X11 Bogger. In deeper stuff, it's the same, but if you don't have the horsies to turn it you're better off with a TSL.

Jeepmangled87 01-16-2002, 05:11 PM It all depends on where you wheel, cant beat a good pair of swampers PERIOD.
Charles Aarons 01-16-2002, 07:59 PM I'd like to see a "shootout" between 11.00R16 Michelin XLs, 38.5/11.00-16 Boggers, and 38/12.5-16 TSLs. On traction, and in sharp rocks till a puncture or failure occurred. Before you put your money on the Swamper products, remember what kind of rig the Michelins are OEM on - 28,000 lb 8X8 armored cars. Can all these armies be wrong?

so they must kick a$$ on a 4000 lb rig too??  :smokin:
Charles Aarons 01-16-2002, 10:55 PM You are right about the $$ signs if you buy them new but you can get them slightly used (80-90% tread) for cheaper than Swampers from a few places. I got a set of 90% (19/32") 325/85R16 XMLs (39X13s) from Dollar Tire in Edmonton for US$120 each. I was lucky, shipping was free, some guys were hauling Land Cruisers up for the Alaska Cruiser Trek.
Michelins have mega load capacity, my 325s are 5070 lb @ 65, I run them at 40 on the street in my F350. They greatly improve the ride, big radials soak up bumps.
