: Ford 9"
spinalguy 01-15-2002, 01:31 PM i am in process of rebuilding my 97 TJ. i have so far purchased a 91 chevy 350 injected, 700R4, Dana 300.
i now am THINKING:confused: of using Ford 9" nodular centre sections (front and rear) with 6.17 gears and using 1.5"-35spline Moser axleshafts (narrow) to 40" Boggers.
This board has a lot of awesome experience and it would be great if you could advise me on any forseeable problems in these choices.
i should mention that it will be a detroit in rear and ARB in front. The purpose will be 14 day vacations to the ROCKS in Arizona, California, Utah,etc... but primarily not much rock up here, so bogs, cutline climbs and off camber trails. Also it will be a daily driver (more or less)
Thanks in advance:flipoff2:
Chrisjeep7 01-15-2002, 02:09 PM COST~!:D also ford 9" housings tend to flex...Truss that bad boy. 40" boggers on a DD, hope your teeth are in good helth.
whatdaphuk 01-15-2002, 02:59 PM make sure that you get one from a Bronco. I bought one from an F150 and since the bearings are different, i could not get 35 spline shafts from moser, also they can't do remaned axles from a 150. I think a 78 Big Bearing/Big bolt will be your best shot.
SeanP 01-15-2002, 03:00 PM truss is good advice. Also, I would shoot for the high pinion in the rear as your wheel base is relatively short and your rear drive line angle will be pretty steep with a standard low pinion.

spinalguy 01-15-2002, 03:19 PM Thanks, i had heard that the nodular 9" would solve the Moser axle issue. As for trusses, absolutely. The high pinion also makes sense.
What does DD mean:confused: :smokin:
SeanP 01-15-2002, 03:32 PM DD=big boobies or Daily Driver.:flipoff2:
jp junkie 01-15-2002, 04:48 PM Also, I would shoot for the high pinion in the rear as your wheel base is relatively short and your rear drive line angle will be pretty steep with a standard low pinion.
I think 4.88 is the highest gear you can get with high pinion.
Beast40 01-15-2002, 08:37 PM First of all scrap the HP idea it uses an 8.8" ring gear running on the coast side while driving forward. If you are going to run 40" tires I would look for a 14-bolt rear. They can be found cheap and are strong enough for the task. 6.17s behind a 350 sound too low for a daily driver and the pinion is going to start getting really small for such a high horse, large tire app like you are putting together. You also can not currently get the 35 spling shafts with an ARB you have to go detroit or spool.
XJEric 01-15-2002, 08:50 PM Moser was able to shorten my 79 F150 9" shaft 5 inches. You have to grind the case near the front pinion bearing to fit the thicker ring gears. Since this is already a weak point in the 9" third member, I'd be concerned about turning 40's. Also, from what I have read 9" pinions don't get drastically smaller at higher ratio's. I've only dealth with 4.57's in the 9". the pinion wasn't any smaller than the 3.55's I took out. Although the pitch (lack of a better word) of the teeth changed on the pinions.
Po' riggity 01-15-2002, 09:35 PM So you want to run a chevy 350, 40" boggers, and 6.17 gears.. on a daily driver.. more or less.. hope you don't ever hit freeways.... because if you do, your top speed is gonna be about 40... if that.. :D
Oh.. and go 14 bolt rear and 60 front.. they are easy enough to find if you have a d300..

hey man well from one canadian to another stick with the 9 inch well at least in the rear i am running a high pinion 44 in the front and a 9 in the rear with 38's but will be going to 39.5 soon when i get some money to do coil overs but this stuff is strong enough for our jeeps they do not weigh that much and you DO NOT want curries high pinion is is much weaker then a regular one plus it uses the 8.8 gears which are smaller as far as arb well i run detroits front and rear and love them i have 5.13 and my jeep is sick...plus you may wanna throw in discs in the back but the drums work very well i know of a guy here in nc who has a sick rock buggy with 42's crazy high horsepower motor running front high pinion 44 and a rear 9 and he has no problems
i hope that can help at all....
spinalguy 01-16-2002, 12:00 PM Thanks all for the input.
The 700R4 combo at 60mph will be 2250 rpm roughly (someone elses calculations) but than again who wants to drive 60 on 40 Boggers?lol.
No ARB or Ox for the front does cause a dilemma as i certainly do not want to be locked on the street:eek:
The weight or lack there of might make those 9" diffs attractive purely on the ground clearance over a 14 bolt or Dana 60?
i'll keep reding the opinions. Definitely disc all round.
Can't wait to meet some of you on the rocks. i have only spent ten days in Tellico and was able to do all trails except 2 winch assists on School Bus and Heli pad. 1 winch assist on trail12 and NO assist on #9! i ran a 4cyl TJ with 4+2 lift and 33 claws at 7lbs.
Alaskan Assassin 01-16-2002, 04:25 PM I made the mistake of going 44 and 9" in my CJ-5, I put a 302 in it and a np435 and 36" swampers and all was good. Soon as I put my 37" boggers on it I couldnt keep a u-joint in the front if my life depended on it. And I took out the 9" shaft... Right now I am in the process of going Dana 60 F&R. If I was you I would go Dana 60:D F&R:D
spinalguy 01-17-2002, 10:59 AM Narrowed axles brings another dilemma: STEERING! So, with no ARB or OX avail in 35 spline 9", i may take your advice and start looking for 91+ Dodge Dana 60 F & R. Thanks and i will keep you all posted on progress.
d60's are overkill takes up alot od clearance waste of money the rear are cheap but you will spend over 2500$ just for the front with gears and a locker and all the brackets good luck man like i said i live near telico and have no problems with my set up....
Alaskan Assassin 01-17-2002, 01:17 PM Cool Spinalguy good luck! I know I sure wished I would have got on here before I swapped a 9" and Dana 44 in my Jeep, maybe someone would have pointed me into the one ton direction:D I god bad lucky on finding my 60's. I found a 1978 Ford f-250 in this guy's yard up here and it was on it's side, he said like the ground had caved in under it so it rolled, any way's I paid the guy $140.00 bucks pulled the thing out an doff I went:D My advice would just be keep you eye out for them:D Good Luck again with the swap!
