I found some D60's for sale, I need to know if they will fit my FJ40. The rear measures 55" from plate to plate and the front is 55 3/4" The guy said they came out of his CJ. Will they work? They are 8 lug and sprung under so they will work with my monster Alcans. Nolen....you out there? Oh yeah, he said he wants $850.........good deal?

Sorry 55" from flange to flange, came out of a 76 CJ7, 4:56 gears with power trax and floater. Someone make heads or tales of this.

Thats about as wide as your current stock axles, so they are pretty narrow. They will fit after you relocate the perches at least for the rear, but you may have issues with front end being centered under the cruiser. That will depend on how much he had the short side narrowed. You'll need to measure the short side of both your cruiser axle and his Dana 60 and see how close they are.

CJ7s use a 27.5" spring center on the front axle. You will have to do some fab work to fit the front axle in correctly. Or you can just squeeze your front springs in 0.25" per side to make them work (not recommended, but has worked for others).
I think the price is good for those axles considering how much an uncut D60 front costs around here. Even if you want to go wider someday, you have the expensive parts already (the D60 outers). It is so much easier and cheaper to get another empty housing.

This is a great price, but they are super narrow.......
I'm not sure you shouldn't just upgrade the Birfs and brakes on your Cruiser axle and run it as is.....
You may want to do this for the parts, gears and lockers and just have them re-tubed at a later date..
I am at a loss for what you should do here, just throwing out some options.

It appears that there might be some confusion on the reference measuring planes here. In his second post, 1970cruiser indicates that the 55" distance is between flanges. If it is truly the backing plate flanges and not the WMS, then these are not so narrow axles. Can you clear this up, 1970cruiser??

Yes this measurement is from the backing plate flanges. 55"

The 60 that I am building was 56" between the backing plate flanges and had a wms to wms distance of 67".

Well, I am going to buy them. Thanks for all the input guys. Hey Nolen....... does the Atlas need a centered rear axle? If so, will a mini truck rear work?
If you have a really long rear driveline, you don't need a centered rear axle. BUT, since you have a 40, you will need to swap in a centered rear axle. You still need a long drive shaft if you run a stock motor since it is offset in the frame about 3.5" to the left side. The compound angles are too much with a SOA and offset rear axle. You can easily swap in a mini truck rear end.
