Ok. First off, its a 350 conversion from a 76 GM into a 70 FJ55. I searched, got some stuff from old posts, and also got some stuff from ih8mud.com. But to no avail- So here goes...

It's an internally regulated GM alternator with batt, 1, and 2 on the the back. I tried the ih8mud wiring for the FJ40, but it didn't charge. So a buddy of mine who knows GMs told me to simply run a jumper from batt post to the 2 post, and from batt straight to the positive of the battery. I did that, and the voltmeter indicates that's its charging. Problem is, after testing the wiring, I think it's draining the battery when it's off. I messed with it for a while, and the only drain comes from the jumper between batt and #2.

Does anyone else have theirs wired up like this? Could there be a fried component inside the alternator? I'm up for suggestions, being that I am a Newbie, (in more ways than one).

Thanks- :fj:

rev up the engine to 2k and check with a DC voltmeter across your battery terminals for about 13.5 vdc, this will indicate if the alternator is working or not. If your not getting this voltage posibilities of a bad alternator. The wiring diagram on ih8mud.com for the internal regulated alt works I have one on my '74 with a 78 2f good luck

not sure which alt you have, but i suspect the connection is hot and the alt is draining the battery. A diode spliced in the line will eliminate this.

Find the trigger wire that indicates the voltage to the alt, tie to switched +12vdc, like the ignition coil so it's only on with the key. Thats where the diode goes, banded end towards the alt, an 1N 4004 from radio shack will do.

Good luck,

I had the same problem. I fixed it like Mike said. I used the exciter from the fuse box but any ignition hot wil do. I have also heard of running it to the coil. I ended up with the diode. I had a small problem of the engine continuing to run after the key is turned off. The Radio shack parts are less than $2 for 4 of them. If there is no store near by let me know and I will send you one. I have 3 extras:D

Thanks SpaceGhost- I'll get over to radioshack and get that taken care of. I'll report back with any successes or failures.
Thanks again- :fj:
