My truck has an emblem on the front fender that says "Dual Range" and in between the two words there is a spiky star shaped sorta circle that says "one" or something like that does anyone know what this means? I have tried searching on the internet for this but I can't find a reference to it anywhere.

I think thats the name of one of the aftermarket overdrive units, maybe the US Gear or Gear Vendors. Crawl under the truck and see if there is an auxiliary trans on the back of the main trans. If so, you scored big time.

Thanks for the tip Pete. Dual Range is an overdrive from US Gear. I was pretty excited when I read your post so I ran outside to lay in a puddle and look under my truck. My truck was equipped with one of these overdrives but it is no longer there. :(:(:(:(:(:(
Here is a pic of the emblem.

Paul is there a spot on the floor for another shifter?
Several years ago I swapped out a gas popper for a deisel in an 80 1 ton. It had a 456 in it and after the swap 50 mph is as fast as that thing would go.
So the guy had me put in a brownie box.
It had low, direct and hi. After that it hit 80 with no problem.
It was a 2 wheel drive rig and with the box in low it was sorta like having a 205 in 4lo.
Not sure who made it we just called it a brownie box.
It was a gear box that had a short shaft to the 465 and then an output shaft, sorta like a divorced t-case for a 2 wheel rig.
Basicly the rig had 12 gears. but we just left it in high range and started off in low.
Great for a heavy load though.
In direct shifted 1,2,3 shift into hi and then go to 2nd and 3rd.
Sorta like driving an old mack truck.

Dual ranges are electrically shifted.
Brown-Lipe auxiliary trannys are commonly refered to as Brownies, etc, as are similar aux trannys.
Pete
to bad,
that usgear box bolts between the tranny and TC so you can split in 2 and 4 whdr unlike the gear vendors POS that hangs off the back of the TC

What transfer case? :D
I've been wanting one of the US gear units for my DD/tow rig. I prefer it over the Gear Vendors not so much for the ability to use it in 4x4 (don't really care in that truck), but the US can be used at any speed (GV you have to be over like 20 or 30 mph), and you can use an exhaust brake in OD (you cannot with the GV).

Yeah it has a TH400. From what I understand the 700R4 was an option but for what I am going to be using this truck for I don't need overdrive. :)

Cool I wouldn’t trust a 700 with a 6.2 whale towing (IMHO) my bro has the TH400 with the 350 motor and I swear by that tranny. It 16 years old and never once has given us the slight hint of trouble and it has towen a LOT of weight. And has about a quarter million K on it. Make sure you got a decent size cooler for it. I tell a lot of people take care of your tranny and it’ll take care of you.
