: 73 grand waggy Tcase?
Dust Puppy 01-16-2002, 06:36 AM ok heres the deal i posted that im getting the power train from a grand waggy here is what im looking at.
amc 360 w/adapter turbo400 tranny which is bolted to according to the book could only be a dana 20. the rear axle is offset but the tcase short as hell, has a fixed yoke on it. according to the users manual the only options there were for that year was a d20 a quadratrac and a quad with a reduction unit. now the shifter lever has 2wheel 4 hi, N, and 4l AND the d30 front has manual hubs on it from the factory.
so is this indeed a d20? if so im going to use that entire setup for the CJ and slap the offset d44 back there along with a passenger side 44 front.
i need to know cause im getting ready to tear down the cj as soon as my broken finger heals.
thanks fawkers :flipoff2: i apretiate it.

WillyPete 01-16-2002, 08:00 AM dana 30???
i hope not, waggies have used d44s in front since 1968, i think (ever since they figured out that dana 27 IFS was a bad idea).
your front end should be a D44, if not, it's a swap in.
sounds like your xcase is a D20, a quadratrac would have a switch inside the glove compartment to lock the driveshafts.
the TH400/D20 setup has an adapter ring this is notorious for being a huge pain in the ass when it comes to breaking and finding spares.
Bonestripper 01-16-2002, 08:43 AM I have the same Waggy, and mine is 27 Front 44 flanged rear, buick 350, T400, D20 Ustick tcase. My rear is not ofset at all, so I aint sure about yours beign offset
hy_desert_4wheeler 01-16-2002, 08:57 AM If your rear is offset then you most likely have the Q-Trac. the Dana 20's were all centered. look at your case if it is aluminum then you have the Q-Trac if ir is cast iron and centered you may have the D20however another possibility is that some one swapped the Q-Trac for a D18 sometime in the past.
Dust Puppy 01-16-2002, 08:59 AM yeah your right its prolly a 27
there itsnt anything in the glovebox its just a lever on the floow.
hmmm i dont think a 360, 400 auto, and a dana 20 will be a bad setup.
man things are startin to come toghether for once.
Grandpa Jeep 01-16-2002, 09:48 AM I saw a '71 in a Junkyard with a TH400, D20, an offset 44 rear and a D27 front, so it sound like what you have is stock. What's this going in? CJ-5? CJ-7? You might run into trouble with that offset rear unless you also use a D18 transfer case.
Seems to me like you're doing this swap backwards. Instead of looking for something that might work figure out what you really want and then look for it. It amazes me that some people have no clue what they are even looking at and think, hmmm maybe this will work in my Jeep. Do a little research and figure out what really works well in a CJ, learn what it looks like, and then find it!
Dust Puppy 01-16-2002, 10:39 AM relax guys relax
why do u think im comin here RESEARCH. cause you guys are the best hehehe :flipoff2: :rasta:
i always do a bit of information gathering before i jump on something half cocked.
thanks fro the help though i do apretiate it :rasta:
WillyPete 01-16-2002, 04:36 PM oooohhhh shiot
my bad, just ignore my last post.
1973 waggy:
AMC360 v8
TH400
D30 front (last year this was available)
D44 rear
quadratrac doesn't have 2WD mode, unless you swap in a part time kit, so i doubt it's a qtrac. D18 would probly have two shift levers, and would explain the offset rear; so it's probly not a D18. D20 sounds like the most possible candidate.
is the output of the xcase offset? if so, it's a D18. if not, it's a D20.
Jeep stopped using D27s in 1970 (but i'm sure there were some carryovers) and stopped using buick 350s in 1971 (again, some where used in carryovers; i've heard of '72s with vigilante 350s).
sorry about my previous post, i didn't have my head screwed on straight, apparently :emb:
emsoffroad 01-16-2002, 08:37 PM Most wagies had an off set rear even with the D20 so the driveshaft won't hit the gas tank. Yes the drive shaft ran at an angle.

This is what I was gonna say, J-trucks are the same way. If it has 2-low and centered output its a 20
CJ-Jeeper 01-17-2002, 05:55 PM There is no 2-lpw in a D20
