: YJ power steering boxes all the same?

A friend of mine said the 87 power steering box he used to have was smaller than the 94 YJ box he put on it. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Are all YJ power steering boxes the same? Or is there a year cut-off where they got bigger?

Thanks,
Phil

I'm pretty sure they reworked the power steering system on the second generation YJ 91?-95 but don't have any facts on it.

I know that my buddy wanted to put a saginaw pump on his '94 and he found a bracket that should have worked for a YJ, but on his it wouldn't. Turned out that the guy who designed it based it off a '90 and they were different.

He's on this board his login is Matt K., pm him and I bet he knows the specifics.

All of the YJ boxes are the same. They came with different pumps from one year to the next and from one engine to the next but the boxes are the same. if you are looking for a replacement box then go find a box off a early to mid 80's Jeep J30 and some J20 pickups. They have a larger piston and are what AGR uses as a Superbox 1 or 2 for Jeeps. Then go to my Web site and do the mods I've got listed and that will give you an equal or superior pump than an AGR. DO NOT use a TJ box. they have a weaker seal setup. An S-10 box can be used to replace those.
Hoped I helped.

This has been my experience as well. My '87 YJ has the same box as my friend's '91 YJ. His pump is completely differrent though (4.0 vs 258) and doesn't feel nearly as strong (less power assist, I suppose).

Thanks LAkerat - that helps a lot.
I just bought six YJ boxes for about US$200
I'm upgrading my POS TJ box to the YJ one, and setting it up for ram assist.

Got any NON-Jeep apps for that bigger power steering box? The J20's are rare up here...

Thanks,

Phil

I guess I was thinking of pumps then.

But I'm with 1TonTJ, any non jeep app's. I couldn't find a J-series if my life depended on it.

I don't have any other apps off of the top of my head. I know there are a few at the local yard where I get my extra parts so I'll check applications next time I'm there and try and remember to post them. The only problem is that most other apps are only a three bolt design instead of the 4 bolt like the J20. This won't matter on the TJ but a YJ uses all 4. But of course you could just leave one out.

Is the steering box on a J10 different from that of the J20? The J10's are much more plentiful here than the J20's.

Hey OnetonTJ...good luck on the box. I sent you a PM and a E mail about a different post. Thanks. Also I may be able to find you a J20 steering box or for sure a Cherokee Chief, I have a parts line on a few FS Jeeps here in Ohio.:smokin: Later.

The J10 boxes are almost identicle to CJ7 boxes and have the smaller piston. As far as I know only the bigger J models had the Large piston boxes. I've looked at hundreds of cherokee and wagoneer boxes and they have all been small but I can't recall looking at a Grand Wagoneer, so that may be a possibility.
