I'm trying an auto tranny out of a sidekick in my sami. I'll be sure to post what I think. I'm having the stall in the torque converter lowered and the lock up disconnected which will hurt fuel economy but was told this will help it from bogging out

For what it is worth, I drove my bud's CJ7 through the Rubicon with a trailer behind it. Stock CJ7 with 31" tires, 4.11 gears, ARBs and a stock auto trans. What a breeze. After wrestling my FJ40 through the trail year after year this was sooooo nice. Ease up to a big rock, sneak up, stop where you want, etc.. Hardly spilled a beer.

Downsides -

No push starts
harder to do field fixes (can't shift with a hammer)
Heat can build up, particularly with a trailer

Best quote I have heard was from a Bronco gys - "you can be climbing a mountain of marbles, stop, and start again without spinning a tire".

YMMV

talked to the guys working on my tranny and they said its just a toggle switch needed to stop the lock up of the torque converter and to make it back to normal.

Pook,
I would like to know how the insall goes and what mods have to be made. I've wanted an auto since I sold my Jeep. I contacted Hawk Suzuki awhile back and they said it was a PITA and wouldn't be doing another one for a customer. I don't think it would be that hard accept for cutting out the floor for clearence and fabbin' a crossmember.

I love my Auto. Its sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. I was a stick man for 13 years on the trails until I swapped to the auto. Its a 700R4 hooked to a 4.3 and Danna 18. Axles have 5.38's and am running 38's. I love the set up.:D :D :D :D

Just unplug the electric wire on the trans to keep it from going into lockup or if you can decifer which is the right wire put a toggle on it like prev. stated

I am thinking of a auto as-well.

Anyone know of a auto that will fit without any floor cutting?

Recently I built my 1987 hardtop Zuk and dropped in a Tracker/Kick 1.6 8V EFI motor and Auto tranny. It has the stock gears and runs on 31X10.50 BFG A/T's. It's not a speed demon but it's definately comfortable to drive on or off-road. The highway RPM's are a bit low and all she really needs is a 4.16 t-case and it would be setup perfectly. Originally it was built to be a daily driver, but with a little work.........

And i thought I'd be alone running the kick auto tranny....:smokin:
