: Unit hub spacing question...

When I put WJ knuckles on my d30 i needed to space the unit hubs about 1/4" to align the u-joint correctly. Apreantly this is because of the differences between the cv shaft and a u-joint shaft... whatever.

At any rate for the sake of gettting stuff done I plasma cut a spacer out of 1/4" mild steel and used it between the hub and knuckle. The hub bolts go through this spacer. My issue is not all of the hub flange is seated in the the knuckle now, only part of it. I'm pretty sure that 3 12mm ultrafine 10.8 bolts cannot handle the stress of a 35 being bounced over rocks, and the hub needs to be seated tightly.

JKS MFG sells these flanges which will be a nice tight fit... the only issue I see is to make them anymore usefull that what I have now I will need to weld them to the knuckle...

In this application is welding on the knuckle going to be a big problem?

Great question and I need the answer myself. I did the WJ knuckles on my XJ and just ignored this problem and used no spacer. Of course my U-joint is not centered and the axle moves side to side when turning. I know this is not ideal, but it works. I don't know how bad this really is. I have been running it for several years though. I would like to do it the best way and weld that spacer onto the knuckles like you mentioned. Please advise us

www.geocities.com/jammerjamesharmon The axle will move in and out as you turn, or if it didn't it would snap the retainer ring on the hub, I know you guys are talking unit bearing, but it seems it would have to move also, how much, that I haven't a glue.I would guess if it has worked for several years, it should be a go. As far as the first post, centering the ujoint, as long as it clears should be fine, I know mine are futher out toward the knuckle than most I see, but they are clearing fine. Don't know if this helps, just fishing here. :D
