I need some help/ suggestions on getting a axle/locker combo for a YJ. This is for my dad's jeep, and he's at the age now where he's to lazy :) to work on the jeep so he's looking to buy (i.e. currie, tri-county etc..) the axles. What do you guys think would be a good combo??

He was thinking 9 in axles from currie with a rear detroit ("full locker") and a true-trac in the front (4.10 gears).

I suggested a detroit in the front (why go half ass with the limited) but he was worryied about handling and steering.

Would a dana 44 be better to go with than a 9 in??

Lastly I know most want to suggest Dana 60's but he's not a real fan of the road handling of the 60's since this is not just a trial rig and he only has 33's for tires,

Thanks for the help and see you on the trail,

pat

IMHO, I wouldnt waste the money on currie anything.. too proud of thier work. They think its all worth a fortune. As far as axles go, If It were mine, Id find some Wagoneer 44's and slap them under the yj. with whatever gearing he wants and detroits at both ends. You don't really need to worry about steering because you will have manual hubs, so it won't be noticed on road. Do you think 33's are as big as dad is ever gonna go on the yj?

Has your dad ever even broken anything on the stock axles or is he doing it because everyone else has them?

With his past jeeps, yes, he has broken his share, but he has not in his YJ. This can be contributed to the fact that he doesn't have lower gears, no lockers, in turn has not taken the more challenging trails and in time he plans on upgrading the motor. So instead of making the mistake of dumping money into the 35 and 30 he just wants to do it right the first time:D .

thanks for the response

living in CA there has to be a ton of axle builders that could build you a Junkyard axle... (much cheaper than Currie) if you were here in dallas i could reccomend 3-4 real good builders
