anybody know the differance in lenght of the AW-4 Cherokee 4 speed and the TF-999 Wrangler 3-speed ?

I am swapping axles and moving the rear 16" back and would like to put the aw-4 in at the same time... with a .74 to 1 overdrive i could run 7.17's in my 60's :roxy:

My 1980 TF-999 measures 22.5". According to the POR bible the AW-4 overdrive ratio is .69 to 1. I'll measure my AW-4 for you when I go to the shop tonight.

does anyone know if the 96-up aw-4 has a TCM or is it stand alone or is it controled by the PCM ?

Just use the trans controller from a 95 or earlier XJ.

An AW-4 needs to have a switch set-up so you can lockout 1st gear since the factory shift pattern is 1-2, 3, OD. It's simple to build, mine cost about $15.00 for the parts.

Otherwise you could just build a simple manual shift box.

will my pcm need any mods since it is not seeing a tranny anymore ??

I'm not sure if the '98 TJ trans is computer controlled or not. I know the computer controls the lock-up converter and I think the rest of the shifting is done hydraulically. It will trip a TC code in the pcm, I'm not sure if it will set a check engine light or not. If the trans has solonoids and is computer controlled it would be a big problem. Otherwise you could just use a pcm for a '98 XJ since the engine is the same and it controls the trans also. You could also use a '98 stick shift pcm and the seperate AW-4 trans controller.
