: blinkers....grrrrrr
sadler5000 01-16-2002, 02:33 PM well when i started with my recent purchased 1970 FJ40, i had nothing working.
no lights/blinkers, and too many other things to mention.
now i hv all my lights working (head, brights, brake, all running lights, & left front and rear turn signals) execpt MY RIGHT FRONT AND REAR BLINKERS. no click, no flash, no indicator light, nada !
also my hazards do not work at all, but i would guess that is the switch ?
what do ya'll think ?
i am about to give up and take it to a mech.
my reverse lights work when they want to, but i can live with them.
i hv had her since sept and i am on the verge of street use.
sorry to bother, but i am getting frustrated.:mad3:
Check the flashing mechanism. It is on the floor by the clutch petal, make sure it is getting power and transmititng power. That could easily be your whole problem.
welcome newbie:flipoff2:
I am fighting the same battle that you are. My headlights are fully functional, blinkers/hazards don't work, and it is just about ready for the street. 1970 Fj55, so I don't know how similar the wiring harnesses are, but I am assuming that they are relatively close.
What have you checked? What have you eliminated from your suspicions?
My suspects are the flashing mechanisms, the relay box, the connection in the column, and the wiring itself- so pretty much everything! Oh yeah, always remember that some vehicle electrical systems are so screwy, that if the dash light bulb goes out, it will take out the entire system that it is tied in to. Food for thought.
Good luck- :fj:
rabid 01-17-2002, 09:31 AM Check the junction blocks/straps on the inside fenders near the bib. All of your directional stuff goes though there. You can buy them new cheap at NAPA. Check the ground at both lights sometimes if onw is out- neither will work. They will usually stay on, just not flash. I think both ground through the housing, so rust might be the culprit.
sadler5000 01-17-2002, 01:49 PM i hv replaced all my lights, replaced the straps that connect all the headlight/running lights on each front fender. i removed the flasher mech wires and cleaned them thoroughly, that is when my left turn signal started working.
my brake lights work in the back. i opened the turn signal switch and cleaned it completely without actually removing the contents (air/contact cleaner).
i did get some good info from another post. what is your email and i will fwd it to u.
1970cruiser 01-17-2002, 03:21 PM I had this same problem with my 40. You know what I finally did that fixed it..........I bought a Painless wiring harness and replaced all of the 32 year old wiring. Sorry I can not help, it could be that you have a high open inside one of your wires. Good Luck!:p
FJ45Mike 01-17-2002, 08:09 PM I second that! You know that thread for free switches? I began just like you are. There were gremlins everywhere! Fix one and two more arrived. I am so happy with the painless setup. It is not really that bad to install just takes a weekend and it all works the first time! Good luck. I know that does not help but I am looking to save you time. At some point when you have the feeling to toss the tester out the garage and yell bad things that make your neighbors take their kids inside, consider the swap. I hope that you have better luck than I did.
The Jerk 01-17-2002, 09:53 PM what are turn signals?
Well, I had a stroke of luck today- I must say, electrical troubleshooting is easy when the problems jump out at you... In the 55 wagon, there's about 10 wires that run along the drivers side floorboard, to run the lights, power rear window, etc... So I was sitting in the back seat tinkering with something, and I looked at the wiring bunch, and saw that a few of them were severed and shorting eachother! Whoo hoo!!! Took care of that, and got my hazards, brake lights, and parking lights all taken care of. Now if only I could get the turn signals working...
Jimmy no likey turn signals??? Sorry. This is going to be a daily driver- RO-ad... Need them blinkers-
Now as for you Sadler- I would recommend checking all of the grounds in the turn signals- Hmmm. It must be a short or something with your pass side blinker wire... Trace it along and see what you can come up with. I can't really say much other than that... Hmm. Persistance!!!!!
I'll take whatever you can send my way! Gotta get this pig rolling! Thanks for the help- Zipp. zippypickle@hotmail.com
sadler5000 01-21-2002, 09:27 AM well i took my fj40 out for a neighborhood spin on sat, and low and behold my hazards started working. appears i hv a short somewhere in the system as my blinkers were doing strange things when driving.
any idea on common places for shorts ?
Definately check ground to ft. and rr. blinker lights.
sadler5000 01-21-2002, 01:29 PM I KNOW WHERE THE GROUND IS FOR THE REAR, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FRONT.
WHERE DO THE LIGHTS GROUND FOR THE FRONT BLINKERS AND HOW CAN I RUN NEW ONES ?
THANKS FOR ANY INFO.
SEAN:confused:
Grounds through the fender itself. Try running a ground wire from battery or frame to blinker mount. My front blinker and parking light was cutting in and out until this. good Luck.
Pin Head 01-21-2002, 03:26 PM It is because there is a high impedance (aka high resistance) connection somewhere in the circuit and like DonM says, it is often a bad ground. If it is not the ground, look for a corroded or loose contact somewhere. You can tell whether it is the front or rear by comparing the brightness to the other side. The dim one has the bad connection. The blinker contact opens when its filament heats up the bimetal spring and it won't get hot enough unless it sinks the right amount of current.
