: Low COG leafs for SOA
I want to lose some altitude on the YJ and am looking for some springs that won't sag in 6 months. Ideally something in a stock height would be what I want, trimming and such can pick up the difference.
I'm looking at the JC Whitney 7 leaf CJ stuff wondering about it. Anybody run these? What else is there out there?
Road Head 06-01-2004, 02:27 PM Get some JC Whitney heavy duty YJ replacements, and run bump stops so you don't negatively arch your spring. They will last much longer if you dont make them bend the wrong way :) BTW, what is your current setup.
apeters89 06-01-2004, 02:40 PM even though this is pretty newbie... I'm running 2.5" leafs SUA with 35's on my YJ.
BTW, what is your current setup.
:massey:-ish. I've got some 2.5" springs on there now, but I redrilled the hanger 1" back and up so it's more like 1.5" of lift. Way more then I need with the body lift on the Jeep.
I'd yank the BL, but the engine swap was tucked in TIGHT with it on there and I'm not in the mood to start fucking with all that again.
AaronC 06-01-2004, 04:09 PM I run the JCW 7 leaf CJ7 rears. They sagged a bit in the back at first, but not too bad, and I think axle wrap had a lot to do with that since I didn't run a traction bar for a while. The front has seemed to hold up well. I've only been on a couple wheeling trips though, since I just finished the swap last fall. Anyways, I don't know if I'm just dumb or what, but it seems that the springs are a hair shorter length or something. I put a little longer (like 1-2" longer on center) shackle on the rear to let the 2nd leaf (military wrap) clear the frame better, and my shackle angle totally sucks. It's like 75-80 degrees :shaking: . Oh well, I think I could clear 37 or 38's with enough trimming, and maybe some bumpstops, since I don't have any now, I know
Hell, I didn't know the 2.5 inch springs were that unstable. I was honestly thinkin of stepping up to them.
AaronC 06-01-2004, 04:12 PM oh yea, if you put the shackle bolt wherever you want, like I should, you wouldn't have any problem. But like I said, they are military wrapped, and might hit the frame, so mounting the bolt lower in or under the frame might be a good idea.
AaronC 06-01-2004, 04:35 PM They seem to flex pretty freakin well :flipoff2:

Anyone running these leafs? Have not heard to much about them. Look good on paper.
RCKRATZ 06-01-2004, 05:31 PM I run the JC Whitney CJ7 Rears at all 4 corners on my rig. They flex like mad and seem to hold up pretty well. Mine are getting bent because I wasn't running bump stops and was going WAY negative with them. I run mine with no body lift and major cutting riding on 38's. CJ5 by the way. The only complaint I have about them is the spring clips, they are junk. You need to either make your own, or go to the spring shop and get some extras
mistertrustee 06-01-2004, 08:22 PM :massey:-ish. I've got some 2.5" springs on there now, but I redrilled the hanger 1" back and up so it's more like 1.5" of lift. Way more then I need with the body lift on the Jeep.

Still don't know if your running SUA or SOA??? You might want to look into RE Springs. They have both SUA & SOA in 5 and 6 leaf packs. I've been running the 1.5" SOA springs for the last year, and have had no problems sagging
Beat95YJ 06-01-2004, 09:01 PM RE 1.5" springs are definately the way to go. Several of my friends run them and are extremely happy with them. There is a set in my CJ7, if and when I ever get it running again.
I've built two rigs with the RE 1.5 springs both have been run hard for the past two years. The springs have held up well and done a really good job on both jeeps. My jeep is going back with the rear hd cj springs so I will see how it does.
Here are some rigs with HD Cj springs. 38.5's to 42's

Both actually, but the end I'm messing with is SOA. I'm getting those FT springs to see how they do. Comparable in price to the JCW stuff and they have a military wrap.

ummmmmm so do the JC whitney's :p
Guess they just don't mention it (http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&langId=-1&productId=267944&mediaCode=ZX&appId=433452)
RCKRATZ 06-02-2004, 03:06 PM what do you expect..... it's JC whitney for crying out loud :flipoff2:
Hosejockey 06-02-2004, 03:36 PM are the CJ springs that are liunked in the jc whitney the same ones you have LAME
AaronC 06-02-2004, 03:39 PM Damn Lame, thanks for the pics.
Now I can show my buddies who think that I don't have room for 38's :D
I don't think they understand what the sawzall is for.
But shit, I didn't think I could run 42's  No sheetmetal left.
Yea FNG, I got mine from JCShitney and they are military wrapped.
Tuffjarhed 06-02-2004, 09:33 PM I know I'm a little late here, but mine is SOA with 2.5" YJ leaves from Alcan.
IndyCJ 06-02-2004, 09:39 PM the HD CJ's are good:D
So is your Mom but I don't go broadcasting it all over the internet.
:flipoff2:

Quit being a TITTY and "JUST CUT IT" , Who gives a FAWK what you friends think.
doomdog666 06-12-2004, 12:16 PM hey LAME, your fender trimming is just right. i was considering comp cutting but i'm starting to have seond thoughts. how did you cut your fronts? it looks like the rear is cut too. how did you roll your edges?

I will when I actually GET the tires.. unless someone else wants to fork over the cash for them, I'm content with my donor truck 33's
I could care less what people think, just like proving the fucksticks wrong :flipoff2:

None of those piles are mine.
Orange one is Mike Knorr
Purple one is Johnson's
Red one is Pate Helgeson
Mike is running 4 year old JC rip me springs up front, 1/4 elliptic rear. He just kept cutting until the 42's fit. The only time rubbing is a issue is at 60mph when the 42's ballon up and hit the leading edge of the rear wheel opening.
Johnson has HD CJ7's all around, all military wrapped. Those pics are the first trip for 'em. They settled about 2-3" over the course of a week wheeling Montrose and Moab.
Pat has 'em all around, with some real nice tubbage on the rear, and modded front fenders. He has 40's. He told me that he "just welded some metal in there" for the rear wheel opening lip.
I use a mix of 4 Runner and YJ leafs on my Willys, and coils in the rear. It sits a couple inches shorter then those rigs. All of 'em can drive through a 7' garage door with no problem :D
doctor_cad 06-15-2004, 08:24 PM I've been wondering if one were to use chevy front springs. You'd end up with only about 4" of lift with the SOA and they're supposed to sit negative. Been thinkin of useing them to replace the stiff ass 3.5" SUA on my brother's YJ. Need to measure length and if center pin is centered to see how much work it would take, anybody got those specs? My chevy springs are about 200 miles away.
I was gonna try that too! Had a set of chevy 2 leaf front packs from a suburban. Didnt have the balls to relocate the steering box though. Link some pics if you do it!!
doctor_cad 06-16-2004, 09:03 AM I think my chevy fronts are all 3 leaf. Both pairs are from late 70s K20s. What's this about relocating a steering box? I figure a 4" drop pitman arm would work.
Could be wrong about the 2 leaf pack, but they were about 2" longer than the stock YJ springs. Even with stock springs my inverted t hi-steer setup (parts mike arms) puts the pitman arm ball joint VERY close to the tie rod, so the chevy springs would cause it to bind under compression...
Wes in TN 06-16-2004, 09:18 AM The chevy front springs are longer than stock YJs (about 1.5-2" longer I think) and the center pin is centered in the spring. They have a much higher spring rate (almost double stock YJ) and are very stiff. I have 2.5" lift Chevy fronts with a couple leaves removed in the rear of the YJ I'm building and I'm affraid I'll have to replace them because they are so stiff.
