that's right, y'all. it's time to start setting up this years get-together.
date: sept 4,5 and 6; labor day weekend.
place: mud lake, northern CA, same place as last year.
if you own a fj45, we need you to show up for sure. if you don't, we still want you to come and hang out. just don't show up in a j**p. :flipoff2:
cost: freebie! :D
although donations to the RAFFLE :cool2: are always welcome.

i'll post more details later. just bring yourself, your rig, camping gear and some food and get ready for a relaxing weekend and plenty-o-45s!

Count me IN!!! No commitments on bbq pig from Joe yet? I'll volenteer whatever it takes to get his BBQ up there. I'll haul it up there, I'll bring side dishes, I'll help with the cost, I'll turn the crank, I'll clean up afterwards, I'll lube his truck... Or is it too soon after the Coastal Gathering to impose on him again. Whatever. I'm there!

family trip? absolutely!
5 year old spotter? you bet!
tow rig and trailer? maybe, but you might want to scout the "trail" first. it's a dirt road that's fairly well maintained, but get's a little tight and windy for a tow-rig with trailer. you can bring it to the big meadow and drop it there, (lake is on the far side of it and so is the "campsite"), or leave it at the top and drive your cruiser down to the campsite(porbably the better idea in this case). there are some cabins at the top. would probably be a good idea to see if anybody else is bringing a camper (like last year) and see if they can keep an eye on your rig, although we have had towrigs left at the top before and had no problems.

Ain't nothing cheap around here but if you'd like a room there are small cabins for rent at Kay's Resort on Silver Lake and There's some more at the Kit Carson Lodge also at Silver Lake. These are both about 10 minutes from the Mud Lake Camp ground.

There's also a reasonable motel in Pioneer, about 45 minutes away from Mud Lake. There's also the OK Corral Motel a little farther up.

Kay's Resort 209-258-8598
Kit Carson Lodge 209-258-8500

The Silver Lake cabins are usually booked way in advance so I'd be calling and reserving now if I wanted one for Labor Day Weekend.

Pioneer Resorts Lodge 209-295-3490
OK Corral Motel 209-295-4883

I feeling the same way about camping these days, but then my house is only about 40 minutes from Mud Lake so I'll be sleepin at home in my nice warm and comfortable bed :smokin: :D :D

John,
You should def. try to get down to it. The climb from sea level in Stockton to Mud lake will certainly require a truck in decent runnning shape, but that thing will do fine, although I swear my FJ55 was making about 4hp at that altitude.
The area of the meet is beautiful country. I will be there for the duration this year, as I only got the chance to hit it up for part of a day.

If you have a mini-bike, bring it!

Georg, don't forget about the Sqaw Ridge Trail, the back way into Mud Lake. That's how Andy, Josh and me made our way to Mud Lake last year.

If anyone is interested it's a very mild trail with extremely beautiful scenery. It follows the northern border of the Mokelomne Wilderness area and crosses a couple ridges that offer some spectacular views of the high Sierras. Several people took the trail when they left and I heard they really enjoyed the trip.

If there's a group who wants to give it a go, I'd be happy to guide the way.
I know that all I have to drive is an FJ40 but no worries, I don't mind shareing the trail with a bunch of old 45's :D

There's on short section of "rock garden" in the middle of the trail that might give you some grief. A 40 on 33's with a couple inches of lift has no problem, but it might take a bit of rock stacking to guarantee you make it through unscathed. The rest of the trail is very mild and would be OK to drive a Honda Accord on! HTH

My thoughts exactly, the only part of the trail where you'd have to watch your running boards is the "rock garden".

I have to laugh every time I think of the last time we all went up there. As we were going in a Jeeper was coming out, I asked him how the trail was and he said it was OK but the rock garden scared him :shaking:  that's were he decided to turn back.
The moral of the story, Land Cruisers tread were Jeepers fear to go. :D

Seriously, it's a beautiful trail, very scenic and well worth the trip.

I believe Andy ran that trail twice that weekend.

also, read the entire post, it should answer most of your questions. the location is mud lake, just west of silver lake and kirkwood ski resort on hoghway 88 in northern CA. basically just southeast of lake tahoe. :)

I think that would be a great trail to take that truck on. You might need to do a little rock stacking but you should be fine. The rock garden is short but is doable. :D

For those interested in the Squaw Ridge Trail that has been mentioned here, there is a write-up of it together with maps, pics, etc, on the California Jeepers site:

Camping is limited by the lake shore, although it is a good size area driving in to the main camp. Couple of good size spots before the bigger camp area also, that are in walking distance of main camp and close to the lake as well.
No Fee's, at least not last year.....no shitters either so it would be a good idea to bring proper camping shittin utensils of your choice. Basically first come first serve basis.

and if any of you could donate a raffle prize or 2, i'd be more than appreciative. and it does'nt have to cost a lot or even be cruiser related. last year we had anything from a bottle of wine to handcleaner to a complete roll-cage. :grinpimp:

Well I'm certainly not the trailboss,
and I am open to corrections,
I believe the criteria are:

1. Owner of an FJ45,or
2. Friend of George, or
3. President of TLCA, and
4. Knows how to say beer in Australia,
5. Does not play folk music on guitar,
6. Doesn't mind good natured jibbing about poor taste in vehicle choice.

I'll leave the dog, wife and 5 month old spotter home. I'll bring my own beer, meat and some raffle material (now you can't say no).

Hey Georg...

are you going to post any directions...??

or is it 'if you can't find it yourself, don't bother coming'!

and to beat the dead horse, are there any places we can leave tow rigs? Sounds limited at the lake, perhaps one of the resorts or last towns?

thanks...

working on the "map and directions".
towrigs can be parked at the trailhead. there's plenty of room for them, or even on the opposite side of highway 88, lots of parking there as well.
i would definetly not advise to bring a towrig and trailer to camp. not that the "trail" (dirt road) is tough to drive, but it gets a little windy and the trees along it might create quite a challenge.
so leave the towrigs at the top and drive the cruisers down to camp; it's only 2 miles off the highway. :)

Sorry about the quality of the map, that's about as clear as I can make it...anyway the highlighted spot at the top of the map is Tragedy Springs It's on the Highway 88 just above and west of Silver Lake.

Tragedy Springs is on the north side of the highway and the trail to Mud Lake is on the south side.

Go south off of 88 into what looks like a private area with a few cabins on the ridge. The trail curves off to the right and goes thru a forestry gate. A little ways further and you should see a sign. From there it's easy :D

While my 45 easily cruises down the highway (292, Toy 4 spd), this particular area is a long drive for me coming outta the North Bay Area. And since I have a tow rig and trailer, might as well use it! Also thinking about bringing my motorcycle so I can go explore the area a bit.

Ya, I've fallen right into the towing routine... and so far, it doesn't suck.

Plan on leaving Saturday morning early and take Hwy 12 around to 88, I guess.

I am not sure which way I'll be coming in, but I was surprised how far from Pioneer the actual turn off was, it seemed further that described. Its a great place to camp, whats the story on using green sticker dirtbikes around the area?

For you mountain bike and m/c guys, there is a cool single track that starts next to the camp at the end of the lake. We took the 50's down it and it just kept going, ended up turning back. Great little trail that winds through the woods. Plus there is sort of a slab area thats fairly big to play on as well.
Definitly bring the toys. Lots of cool places to check out.

What's the status of campsites? If Georg isn't going up 'til Saturday, will there be anyplace for a hoard of cruisers to camp? It is Labor Day weekend!
