OK I'm over reading the posts on EE and I come across some something weird.
I have been working on my 4x4 for over 20 years and have never seen a Tru Trac that was made only for rear apps or only for frt apps. Is this some Rover thing or are these guys :smokin:
Basicly I bought what was presented as a front tru-trac, got it installed, drove really beyond bad on the way home. Unit turned out to be a rear soft locker.
The handling charateristics of the truck were crazy. I would be driving along and all of a sudden the truck would jump 6' over to the right. It was a very bad thing.
Chris von C
Chris and Kyle are both saying that the LS for the rear is differtent than the front one
FWIW If Chris can't tell the difference between a detroit and a TT he needs to sell his truck and buy a honda!

I can confirm that there are different part numbers and the front and rear TTs, and they are in fact different. I am told it is really "bad" to mix them up.
However, a rover detroit may be installed either front or rear.

Carnt remenber where I got the info but my understanding is that the front and rear tru tracs have different torque bias ratios. For example the rear may have a torque bias ratio of 4:1 and the front may have 3:1 torque bias ratio. Meaning that the rear can transmit a 4 units of torque to one wheel and 1 unit of torque to the other without slipping and the front can only transmit 3:1 (say).
This means that the rear TT is a lot more aggressive than the front. I guess if the front was as aggressive as the rear it may cause steering difficulties.

Bill @ GBR said that a rear TT in front or vice versa would last under 1000 miles.
I don't remember why. I certianly was not going to try it :)

Old Scout, I would like to take a moment to address your post...
"Chris and Kyle are both saying that the LS for the rear is different than the front one"
Unfortunately, that's not what was said at all. If you would try re-reading my 2 posts and kyles 1 post in that thread, you will find that we never said that a Tru Trac would not work in the rear or front only. What was said is that a Detroit rear nospin locker (in that post I called it a soft locker) is not intended to be installed in the front for Rovers. I bought the locker from a dealership after I was told it was a Tru Trac that would go in the front. The locker turned out NOT to be what I thought I was buying but didn't find this out until I was driving it home after it was put in.
"I have been working on my 4x4 for over 20 years and have never seen a Tru Trac that was made only for rear apps or only for frt apps. Is this some Rover thing"
I'm not a locker expert by any means and I cant speak for other locker models for other 4x4s let alone explain in anymore detail Rover lockers but when part numbers for Tru Tracs are different for front and rear in Rover applications, I assume there is a difference between the 2 for a reason. For your learning pleasure, here is a link listing the different lockers available to us Rover owners.

"FWIW If Chris can't tell the difference between a Detroit and a TT he needs to sell his truck and buy a Honda!"
I haven't worked on my own 4x4 for 20 years like you. To be honest, when it comes to automotive mechanics, I freely admit to being inexperienced but trying to learn. However, I am fairly confident, that you knew nothing about it as well when you started out working on your own stuff but yet amazingly, I don't think you gave up and sold your 4x4 for a Honda or you wouldn't be here puffing yourself up.

You need a thick skin to hang out on POR. Better learn quick if you plan on posting more here. The only thing I use to puff myself up is

Haha,
Welcome Chris,
Although I don't know all of you here on POR Rovers, I know some of you and I think you're all good people. I enjoy this forum quite a bit, since I'm not a purist by any means.
I can say that I've wheeled with Chris Von C everywhere from NJ to Utah in his Rover and he is definitely a good guy. He is by no means a poser Latte drinker. He IS however, a nice person who would post the negative effects of A DL in the front axle of a truck without selectable front hubs on a BBS where people generally know nothing. He is not an ASE II mechanic, but he knows enough to be a good trailmate.
He also has a sexy, flexy Disco that goes well in all terrain I've seen it on.
Most of my posts from the EE board or Discoweb can be taken out of context to make me seem like an asshole, but I'm not...especially when I go tell people to fuck off :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
In fact, the few of youn that know me in person would probably back me up when I say I'm the outlaw asshole of the NE LR community. I've generally had alot of problems with the Latte drinkers out there. And most have some kind of issue with me.
:flipoff2:
Anyway,
I like C Von C...he's a good guy.
