: Clutch Antics
DaJeeper 06-03-2004, 01:17 PM 83 CJ7 4.2 short block, 4.0L head. Mopar MPI kit.
I have a shop install my newly overhauled engine into my CJ7. In the process they replaced my clutch which the clutch plate and flywheel was precision balanced when the engine was being machined.
Anyway, After I left the shop and got to the first stop I noticed the jeep kept moving forward even after I had the clutch pressed in. Now I'm not sure my memory is correct but could this happen if the jeep was also out of gear?
It has since gone away but wanted feedback on what could have caused this.
Thanks,

In gear - can cause creeping.
Out of gear, unless you're on a hill = fine.
I'm assuming the new clutch = lots of friction material. Once a bit of it wore off, it's back to acting normal. Either that, or maladjusted clutch, (bent fork, etc).
If it's gone, don't worry about it.
kwrangln 06-04-2004, 04:19 AM The middle pedal will stop this from happening.
JeepinIan 06-04-2004, 04:23 AM The clutch was not adjusted correctly. This will ot happen when you are not in gear, unless, as mentioned, you are on an incline.
vetteboy79 06-04-2004, 02:19 PM Yes, like was said, either the clutch disc is still kinda hairy and not seated properly, or the linkage isn't right, or something is fawked.
Do you have any problems engaging first gear while stopped?
I'd say give it a few good burns, start out in 2nd or 3rd a few times to seat the clutch good, then see if it still acts up on ya. If that don't fix it, go underneath and play with the linkage, adjust it so there's more action on the throwout bearing, and try again.
On my 'vette, the clutch fork bent where the throwout bearing sat, and it did the same thing. I maxxed out the linkage tryin to compensate for it and nothin...finally ended up just changing the damn thing. Expensive little part. Hope you don't have to do that too...

There ya go. Overheat the friction material, do your best to warp the flyhweel, and if you're lucky, you can probably induce some hard spots on it while you're at it.
Brilliant advice.
Any more voo-doo tech to offer?
vetteboy79 06-05-2004, 01:40 AM Well no, I didn't mean do it as a daily habit. A few times of starting off in 2nd gear won't kill anything. It can take a while for the clutch to seat properly.
But I don't think that's what his problem is anyway.

If you have to do this to a new clutch, then you got a CHEAP clutch. I have never had to "burn" or "seat" a clutch. If you replace the disc, pressurer plate adn throw oput bearing w/ quality parts, and have the flywheel resurfaced, then you should have no problems at all.
Keyster 06-05-2004, 06:51 PM If the disk got bent the clutch will drag.
Hard to shift or put into gear.
Once the trans shaft engages into the disk, be careful not to let the trans hang or get pushed too far out of line.

mikeswrangler 06-05-2004, 09:24 PM I had mine replaced a while back in a shop..
the clutch house.. on auburn blvd in citrus heights..
its been acting up as well..
the clutch line keeps getting air in it and wont release it all the way..
and when stopped .. I need the brake on hard or it will grab and move the jeep into the intercetion or lurch forward hard.. it will almost kill the engine...
I beled the lines 9 times so far but it still dose it.. cant downshift it e-z in stopping.. on at a stop.. cant find reverse or first without going to 4th or 5th then 1st
lol
DaJeeper 06-05-2004, 09:58 PM I Took apart the clutch linkage today to find the bushings in one side of the
linkage was completely worn out, the pivot bracket ball on the same side was
worn half way through, the holes the rod pivots on is worn. More or less
need to replace the complete linkage assembly.
I was able to put a bushing in (which did tighten it up) until I can get a clutch linkage kit.
Thanks,
YJ4RoX 06-07-2004, 10:01 AM Hey guys I am having a similar problem. I installed a ax15 behind my 4 banger. New clutch and new internal throw out/slave setup. I reused the pressure plate but it only had about 20k miles, no glazing etc...
After I first installed everything it worked great for 3 wheeling trips nice and smooth. On the last trip out it began shifting hard going into reverse and 2nd. In low range i notice a little movement when I shift from nuetral into gear. With both tcases in low it rolls about an inch or two when i put it in gear and its VERY difficult to get into reverse.
Do you think the pressure plate fingers are shot and the clutch isnt disengaging fully? I still need to try bleeding the slave again incase there was a small air pocket higher in the system that took a few trips to work down into the slave.
Any thoughts, i really hate to pull the tranny again, actually last time I pulled the engine because its faster than disassembling the doubler set up.
OldGreen 06-07-2004, 02:43 PM If you or a shop put the disk on backwards this exact thing will happen. Ask me how I know. . .
YJ4RoX 06-08-2004, 05:23 AM Disk is not on backwards, i know that for sure. Any other ideas?
JeepinIan 06-08-2004, 07:52 AM If you or a shop put the disk on backwards this exact thing will happen. Ask me how I know. . .
Lemme guess, ummmmmmm
you've done it?
Me too!:D

When I was a kid *cough*
The only other thing that I have seen other than what has been mentioned is the wrong pressure plate being installed or an incorrectly resurfaced flywheel.
