"smog is do", what's that?

Ok for Nevada and I think this is some sortof Federal law.....

If you can not pass a smog test to get a smog certificate you can attempt to fix the vehicle by spending no less than $200 in parts or service and if after spending the required amount you still can not pass a smog test you will be granted a one year exemption. Which means that every year (or your smog certificate interval) you will need to do this all over again.

I really hate smog laws, not because the idea is bad but because it has no basis in environmental concern and is solely in place as a huge revenue source. If the smog laws where in place to protect our lungs, there would be no way you could drive a vehicle as toxic as a smoking cigarettte.

And it just goes to show you that enough money in the right hands can buy you anything. Or as someone once told me smog laws are the governments way of taxing air.

In UT the exemption law says that you can do this Once in the vehicles lifetime. You have to have repair orders from a Smog certified shop and then have an emissions station do the final OK on the exemption. However I have seen a few vehicles pass with flying colors on the sniff test but fail due to the visual.

Ex. No cat, airbox removed, smog pump taken off etc........

If the engine runs good and is tuned properly it should pass.
Unless there are alot of Hi-perf. parts on it.

Also in UT if your vehicle is 1986 and newer you cannot replace the original engine "ex. 6cyl" with an 8cyl unless that vehicle had the option of the 8cyl engine. And then you would have to put ALL the factory smog sh(t back on in accordance with the 8cyl engine. And then you would have to get it to pass through the County inspector for the OK.

In CA ther is no go around. It is either right or it isn't. No amount of of exemtions will work for you. When itme are missing, it is considered a tamper and the $450.oo cost waiver does not start until all smog equipment is intact.

Yep this is the way it works. They might even impound your vehicle as a gross polluter since it is so unstock. You could either look for some tags that'll make it a pre '72 Cruiser or go find yourself a stock '88 motor to swap in for smog times. Either way it is going to cost you some $$$$. Just goes to show it's not worth tossing smog stuff out if you have a car that has to deal with it.

Try to find a smog shop tech that will "work" with you...
IE, you pay him some money under the table, but you'll need
more than just that. You'll need another person with the same
year/motor type rig you have. The tech can do the visual and
the sniffer on the "legal" rig, but enter the data into the system
from your rig. BUt that's just a bandaid, cause in another 2
years you're back to square-one..

--Sherpa

no, I don't know any smog tech's who can help you.
IF they get caught, they'll:

loose their smog license.
be fined ALOT of money
get banned from smog testing
loose cash from getting caught.

One question....Why would anyone put a 69 350 in an 88 YJ? Especially a registered vehicle in Cali......
Get around it, here is an idea. Drop in a TBI motor!

I just took my truck through emissions testing today. It's the IM240 test for '92 and newer and a more simple test for older vehicles. Here you are allowed a conditional pass if you fail but you only have three months to fix it or spend up to the one year maximum on repairs. They do it that way so you don't go broke trying to pass the test.

Here are my results:

Failing test in October:
HC
vehicle reading: 0.2526
max allowable: 0.9900
CO
vehicle reading: 9.9074
max allowable: 12.4300
NOx
vehicle reading: 2.1206
max allowable: 1.5500

Passing test today:
HC
vehicle reading: 0.0026
max allowable: 0.9900
CO
vehicle reading: 0.4123
max allowable: 12.4300
NOx
vehicle reading: 0.2449
max allowable: 1.5500

Total cost to repair, $17 and about 40 minutes of my time. :) I feel much more environmentally friendly today. http://allterrainers.com/YaBBImages/bigokhttp://allterrainers.com/YaBBImages/bigokhttp://allterrainers.com/YaBBImages/bigok

Very true. I built my Mustang the summer before we got emissions testing here. I knew it was coming and chose my parts accordingly. When it came time to test I passed quite easily and it didn't affect the performance of my car very much.

I spent the $17 on an air filter and a PCV valve. Had to get it from a ripoff place because the cheaper place was all out of filters.

Anyway, the other thing that I did was put my cold air ducting back on. What I have found over the years with my car was that drawing air from outside makes a huge difference in how clean your engine runs. With the Mustang drawing hot air from directly over top of the headers the readings were off the scale. Add ducting to draw air from outside and it would pass easily. When I saw the high NOx I remembered that and sure enough the cold outside air cleaned me right up.

I believe you have to use a verifiable address and the PO Box if you use the PO Box in both CA and NV. I tried it that way a few years ago, but it didn't work :(

Call John at (530) 865-8872. He may be able to hook you up with some tags and ID plate ;)

Just a thought... Get a reciept for an early 88 350. ie still carb. Buy all the smog equip. at the junk yard and install it. take it to a referee, and see whats left to do until you pass. And what the hell were you thinking when you installed this motor in the first place? Year for year or year for newer year motor swaps are legal, you just have to retain all smog parts.

regester your truck in a smog exempt area, if you have relatives in a ruarl (sp?) part of california IE: Bishop or Mammoth california, NO Smog checks EVER! I lived and have relatives in bishop and never had to be smogged, due to population desnity vs. air mass...

This is the way around smog.

Sell your rig to someone who lives in Ohio..

Register it in their name. Use Ohio plates.

Drive it where you live. Simple....

MO? Delstoy?

It is true that certain parts of cali dont have to smog. I think it goes by zipcode area though. My parents live in east San Diego county and never have to smog there cars.

my mom lives in sonora and was scratching her head when i told her i had to smog my truck again. if you go into dmv, they are kind enough to provide you with a map of california on the wall with all the counties with anal smog laws and which ones dont. pretty much any county in the foothills expect el dorado -go figure-
