: Roof rack pics
Im4yotas 01-17-2002, 12:31 AM Ok, let's see 'em. I have a Conferr rack that rusted to shiit, so I'm thinkin of making my own. Just curious to see what you guys are using. It's going onto my Yota's shell, needs to hold a gas can, water, cooler?, etc. but it has to be low enough so I can still fit in the garage after the SAS and lift. (Actually, I'm more worried about lifting it in the garage, and not making it back out when I'm done:D )
Im4yotas 01-17-2002, 12:35 AM Oh, yeah. Also am curious about light mounts forward and rearward. Stock reverse lights don't even light up the lense that covers 'em, and I hate it when people tailgate me on the freeway.
Belly Dragger 01-17-2002, 07:18 AM I have a Surco, works ok the rivets are working loose and needs some aluminium welding done to hold it together.
They sell light tabs and I use 4 up front. For backup lights I just drilled holes through the expansion pieces in back for 3 reverse lights.
Why not just bolt it to your yota shell, that would keep it as low as it can go.
The rack is 4" plus lights but you can mount the lights differently for less additional height.
60seriesguy 01-17-2002, 11:39 AM here's mine, it's an INTI rack from Venezuela, aluminum frame and flooring with steel clamps and superstructure. The aluminum frame is designed to tweak before the truck's rain gutter does. It's got a separate section for jerry cans in the front, four light mounts in the front and two in the back.
The entire rack weighs about 80 lbs, but it will hold ten times that with no problem, though I certainly wouldn't recommend carrying that much on it. I've had 400 lbs on it for long expeditions with no negative effects (except on the mileage)...
60seriesguy 01-17-2002, 11:40 AM Here's the whole rack, I meant to add this picture first.
60seriesguy 01-17-2002, 11:44 AM Here's one more, where you can see the clamps; I also forgot to add that the sides of the rack pivot and collapse sideways, if you need the added clearance. Moot point in my springover truck, but useful in other cases...
60seriesguy 01-17-2002, 11:49 AM One more showing the roof rack on the truck, from behind.
rugburn 01-17-2002, 02:08 PM I think I just wet myself!:emb2"
Damn Henry, I'm spoting wood over that last shot!
The Princess sure looks great!!!!!!
60seriesguy 01-17-2002, 02:24 PM Thanks, rugburn! She looks good at about that distance, but not bad for the old beast after 10+ years of service as a daily driver and expedition rig, five countries, thirty-eight US states and counting...
VT_Toy 01-17-2002, 04:46 PM There's a cool shot of Princess going into mud at the Yankee Toys Fall Gathering, the write-up is at 4x4Wire in the Toyota section. I'd link it, but they use frames and stuff, which makes it really hard to figure out what the darn URL for the pic is
Dirty Harry 01-17-2002, 05:15 PM Damn you are lazy Eli! :flipoff2: Here is a link to my write-up and all of the pictures.

What I didn't mention was that after Henry got hopelessly bogged down in the mud the rest of us drove around the hole!
INTI Racks (and bumpers for that matter) are definitely tough and have that expidition look, but Henry is just teasing you since you cannot get one here. Garmin makes good racks and if you are concerned about height you could put a Yakima rack on your shell and put a tray on it.
emsoffroad 01-17-2002, 10:29 PM Here is a pic of the one that I have on my 4runner. I don't have any pics of it painted black and on my runner.
Sloan 01-18-2002, 01:18 AM So what do I need to do to hook myself up with one of these INTI racks? Got to Venezuela?
Hey Henry , where are the mirrors I sent you. I want to see some pictures of them mounted on your truck.

Cutter 01-18-2002, 07:41 AM Hey 60seriesguy , cool rig! ...must get really bad gas milage looking at all them gas cans...wait! thats where you keep your home brew hidden, ain't it?
:flipoff2:
Rover Addiction 01-18-2002, 11:22 AM Here's a few of another similar idea on my D90. I realize this won't fit onto anything else, but it's a good starting point for an idea. It's stainless steel and quite substantial. I haven't been running it recently because I don't need to carry that much stuff right now and it also adds weight up top that I'd rather not have on the rocks.

60seriesguy 01-18-2002, 01:44 PM Seven NATO jerry cans across the front is the standard expedition formula in Venezuela, they fit nice and tight in there and only need one ratchet strap to keep them all in place (I also use a wire rope through the handles to keep them all from "walking away"). I happen to keep gasoline in mine, but it is almost standard fare for Venezuelan expeditions crossing national boundaries to keep booze in jerry cans to avoid custom hassles at border crossings. On a recent expedition, a buddy of mine carried 20 liters of scotch for the team in a jerry can bought new for this express purpose! :)
