: PTO Winch mount cracked- Repair?
Pytbool 01-17-2002, 06:35 AM I just found a PTO winch for sale for $500. Sounds like everything on it is OK except that the driver side mount is cracked. This is a pretty typical thing to watch out for, I've heard. The guy didn't know it was cracked until I asked him to check, so I';m sure I could get a better deal on it. Anybody know of a safe, and fairly inexpensive fix? Can it be redrilled somewhere else for a new mount? I suppose it could be welded, but that is a lot of trust to put in a weld....

Pytbool 01-17-2002, 11:05 AM Nothin'? OK, how about what the gearbox casing is made of?
Cast iron, cast steel, aluminum?
rick d 01-17-2002, 11:12 AM Cast steel body, guess about $125 to repair foot if welded (brazed) well. new, they are $400. Quesitons also, is it complete? Are internal gears OK?, is pillow block complete? Is shear pin unmodified?
$500 sight unseen may be too much. Shipping is heavy....
Pytbool 01-17-2002, 02:12 PM Thanks for the help, Rick. The whole winch is complete with all components. It is off of a '66 FJ40 and the fella says he's had the Cruiser for about 6 months.
I didn't ask about the shear pin, but what should I be aware of with that? Undue strain on all components? I can see that if the shear pin broke, such force would put at least SOME stress on other components.
Specter lists the gear cases as $250, used. Sound right?

rick d 01-17-2002, 07:34 PM Pytbool-
see Specter page 071. Case is 071-BB and goes for (only) new $471.45. gear boxes are the power take offs.
Gear "D" (bronze, inside case) if bad is $$$
Yoke "AK" for shear pin is $128 if ripped out
pillow block "P" (aluminum bearing holder that bolts to rad crossmember arm) is unobtainum
over arms "R & T" are only available used as is any of the fairlead,
are shims "AC" (x2) and "AF" (x2) with winch? (w/o, the cases crack)
is the shoe holder "F" bent or broken?
is rod "AP" bent?
is knob"D" broken,
etc, etc.
Can you touch this winch before you buy it? I don't think too many here are found of these winches and if you want a winch as a tool, buy an electric.
...is this seller the same guy who claims his winch is super stong and can pull 5,000 lbs all day long on CCoT board? (when it is rated for 1,800 Kg /3,900 lb, the factory spec)

No, that guy is in OR and his is a 1973.
Pytbool 01-18-2002, 06:26 AM Whew! I never thought there was so much to consider....
see Specter page 071. Case is 071-BB and goes for (only) new $471.45. gear boxes are the power take offs
My mistake there...thought they were referring to the case as a gear box, too.
Unfortunately, I can't see the winch before I buy it, as he is in Mo and I am in NJ.
Can you give me more info on the factory or nonfactory PTO winches? Or direct me somewhere that has more info? I was always under the impression that they were superstrong despite the rating (also thought they were rated around or at least easily capable of 8000lbs) and somewhat difficult to beat up. Please dispell some myth!
I was intending to use the winch- I'm not restoring. I really thought most people didn't use the PTO winch because most Cruisers did not come with them, an electric is just plain simpler to hook up, and more readily available.
Anybody have experience with the PTOs vs. electric?

rdohn 01-18-2002, 08:45 PM Yeah...if anyone has info on there please divulge!!! I saw a complete PTO setup in a Junkyard today and asked the guy how much....$300 don't seem bad for everything....but now that I hear it's not all that....humm....:nuke:...save the $$$ and go for an electric.
