I got a dana 44 rear axle with Warn's full floater outers. It is leaking at the axle flange so, I took it apart. Seal looks good but the bolts on the flange were somewhat loose. I suspect that to be the problem. When I tighten them back up what should I torque them to? Also how tight should the spindle nuts be? What is the torque spec. on them also. They were also almost finger tight. Thanks for any info you can give me.

I think I got a similar problem. Maybe if I post, some one will see this question and help us both!?!
78 K20 Dana 44 front axle leaks around the ?pinion seal? flange? At the back of the diff case. Leaking. Stock truck and axle, just started leaking out of nowhere, not just a little but a puddle the dia. of a softball over night. I recently changed out the gear oil and gasket for the diff cover. No contaminates or shavings... Not overfilled. Driven very rarely and very little distance when it is driven.
How difficult is this job, what caused it,... and any other newbie questions you think I might have! Please help?

unbolt the driveshaft from the axle yoke, pop it off, remove the nut holding the yoke on, pull the yoke off, use a flat screw driver to pry the old pinion seal, lightly tap in the new seal making it flush with the axle housing. make use you clean the housing first. real easy to do.

Wow, Thanks! I'll give it a try. I know I sound like a R, but whenever something goes wrong that I'm unsure about, I think the worst, most expensive possible problem... You know the type... Anywho, Thanks for the quick and accurate reply. I'm toasting some cold ones back right now in your name.

by axle flange are you talking where the axle bolts to the backing plate of the wheel assembly or are you referanceing the Pinion located at the differential that bolts to the drive shaft... regardless both seals are pretty easly to replace in the manner described above... just make sure you tighten the bolts good and tight... I personally use RTV anywhere I think there could be a chance of leakage....

And it's always a good idea when you lose a pinion seal or axle seal to make sure your axle vent isn't clogged.
