: ZJ Grand Cherokee Unibody Cage Pics
ashmanjeepXJ 06-08-2004, 01:26 PM I built this cage for a friend Chad. Its all 1.5in DOM 1020, 120 wall.

ashmanjeepXJ 06-08-2004, 01:34 PM After the front was all tacked together, it was dropped through the floor,
The weldeds were completed, and gussets added.
The 4 feet were then welded to the sleved framrail and to the rocker channel. The frame rails have 1/4in thick box tube sleaving from Chads long arm suspension project. So the suspension, cage and "frame" are all tied together.
The shoulder straps tie into the cage at 4 points, and front and rear seats have tub for future seatbelt harnesses.

ashmanjeepXJ 06-08-2004, 01:40 PM The C-hoop could not drop through the floor due to the factory gas tank location, and the factory rear coil mouts. These 4 tie-ins use plates welded to the sheetmetal on top of the unibody frame rails.

The x-brace was added after the cage was raised back in place.

Then the front dash bar spreader and the three rear roof bars were welded.
http://www.wheelingarizona.com/forums/download.php?id=2142
Its done and ready for paint or clear coat, and foam padding.
I really like the B-hoop bracing, I like the 4 feet frame tie ins, and I like the look of the C-hoop bends.
The rear seats fold forward with the bottoms pulled out. The front seats go all the way back for its 6ft tall owner. Still has good cargo room in the back.
B.A.R.K 06-08-2004, 02:04 PM Looks Killer.

This is my friend Chad's rig, not mine, I just built the cage... I did all the welding on the cage, I planned the angles cuts and notches, I held the angle-o-meter while Chad did the bending work.
Ill dig up some pics of the out side. The 33-1050's are just SICK huge :flipoff2:
It has a 8.8 rear and d30 front with 4.56 gears lockers, SYE, custom long arm 7in lift that Chad made, Chad built his bumpers, and has some of those kevin's sliders, and little 33s right now. Not a buggie but cool for what it is.
Chad just painted it and padded it, and it looks even better. Ill post some pics at lunch.
That should keep those shopping carts at bay ;)
P&T Jeeps 06-08-2004, 07:34 PM very nice. :D

BrettM 06-08-2004, 09:25 PM looks good, I really like the drop through the floor method, did you get that idea from CRASH (Andy)? that interior is hideous though, tell him to gut it and bedliner.
ItsaJeepThing95 06-08-2004, 11:43 PM Bwahaha! I knew the comments about that nasty-ass red interior would be on their way!! Now we just gotta see if Chad can make it to Moab this weekend to test it out! BTW, Chad, you running Pritchett with Cody or Cliffhanger with me on Friday??

That is TRUE.
But dam, I dont think I could drive surrounded by that much red :barf:
Once again, nice work on the cage.
geberhard 06-09-2004, 03:21 PM Really nice work!!!! One of the best in cages for ZJ and WJ's I have seen.
Damn, with that much red I would go aggro and drive over someone, or make some money on the side and attach some handcuffs to the cage.
Nice work!!!!
Gui
I love it. DO you have any pics of the sleeving of the rails, and the final look of the connection to the cage from the rails? I would be interested to see that.

Just wondering, was it a PITA getting the oil out of the insides for a clean weld, or was it a none-issue? That stuff is cheap, when compaired to regular HREW, but the oil has me spooked.
Stripe 06-10-2004, 03:51 PM Hey ashmanjeepXJ ,
Where did you come up with the padding for your cage? It looks good. They look like the noodles I use in my pool.
Wow, that cage looks to have some design parameters that are similar to mine. ;)
Nice work.
Jes
Looks good, If you roll that GC you would be one bummed out dude. Those flimy body panels crush like tin foil

If you condsider 3.85 a foot cheap so be it. It isn't hrew, read the post it is DOM. The P and O DOM was no different welding than any other material I have ever used. It was actually easy welding it and it didn't produce much spatter, therefore not requiring much protection to the interior while welding.
