: Let the Build up Begin!!!!
Scout Dude 01-17-2002, 01:14 PM I am working out the small details...but my 44 & 60 are now SOLD....
On to the next axles and mods...
Swapping my buddy for a 63" 14 bolt with 4.56's already...I will install a Hobart locker in this one.
Front RC Ford 60:
Several places make brackets to put Chevy brakes on it...have to figure out which one...I might make my own if I can figure out how (if anyone knows anything on this subject, please help me out)
Lowest cost so far: $400 for Loaded calipers and brackets
Narrowed to 64": $320 (this will also switch the sides of the diff)
I have been looking at all the different beadlocks out there and I really like the centering ring that the Aggros use (I helped H8Monday put his on, so I got a good look). No one else seems to make a Steel rim with this style of ring. MRT, and others use a stepped ring to help center the tire...this would work too but MRT's are too much money and the other ones that I found have super thin rings (.115 rolled:rolleyes: ) Looks like the Aggros will be on order soon: $900 shipped
And that leaves me just enough for the Misc crap that I need( you know..stuff like steering)...looks like I'll have to build a few more cages so I can buy front Axle shafts and 4.56's....
Fawk..I can't wait to get mt Scout going again.
So how is your Winter going?
jdjanda 01-17-2002, 01:50 PM Sounds like I better get that info over to Rubi about the cage. Might just have to host a wrench weekend to finish this stuff.
Here is my list, trying to finish by March
Misc.
Finish OBA
Mount new tires
Clearance fenders :D
Extended brake lines
Power steering cooler
Tranny Swap
Rebuild T-case with Tera Gears.
Install manual tranny
Axle Swap
Setup front T-all axle with hi-steer, drag link, and tie-rod, w/all new TRE's.
Prep rear 60, weld up spiders, new hard brake lines
Swap new axles
New shocks all 4 corners
tsm1mt 01-17-2002, 02:34 PM Too much to do. :D
Hopefully there's a race in early/mid-Feb.. if so.. by then..
Reassemble my new '44 front (all the parts are there, in boxes..) and swing it under.
Install the new Roggy Bilsteins. :D
Replace broken tailhousing, heave-ho another Dana 20 into place, change the oil, remove the snow (if we have some by then) from the front seat and fire it. :D
Re-do the ripped-out hood pins and bent hinges on the front clip.
Air up the trailer tire, weld the fenders back on.. and go play.
Take a break from doing that and go wheelin' in a week. :)
Then sheetrock the shop and "finish" it..
Then I want to finally get started on the 392 for my pickup..
In the meantime I'll come up with a dozen other projects that are more important..
REDDMANIAC 01-17-2002, 05:01 PM You selling rollbars made to order??? For the ScoutII. If so how much for a simple front hoop, doublecenter hoop, & rear fastback style hoop. (similar to what you have on yers now cause I like). Also want good sized tubing, maybe even seat mounts bilt in. :D :usa:
Brandonw 01-17-2002, 07:54 PM Sounds like everybody has a fun project ahead of them:D
I finally finished my full width SOA on my 75 Scout. Now just have to work out the minor details(like mounting shocks:smokin: ) and doing something about the pinion angle up front. Maybe put shims between the axles and turning the knuckles, I'll find out how bad it is when I finally take it out wheeling, if if ever get to take it out.
Also trying to rebuild a 345 i got laying around. Still have to take it apart and get the block and heads to the machins shop.I figure it will be done sometime in the next few years. Like all my other projects. But then again, are they ever really done:question:
Oh yeah, anybody know where I can get a good deal on some shocks? Dont really care what kind as long as they fit and function.

Joel- Joe sent me pics of your Toy cage. How much to install one in my daughters Toy? It has the stock sunroof in it.

Hey Mark,
I have about 6 cages lined up right now and I still need to get my Scout finished. The Toy cage that I did was very difficult and I said that I was going to stick to open top vehicles from now on...now that I have calmed down a bit, I might consider doing another one. I'll get back to you on that ok?
FYI, Toyfamily makes Toy cages that are pre bent and you weld in. I don't know if the sunroof would be a factor or not wit his.
Redmaniac: I have at least one Scout II to do so I could actually make two cages, but the shipping would kill the deal. Also, you'd be at the bottom of my list. Have you checked with your local shop to see how much they would charge?

What did you use for a front end, and why is the pinion angle bad? RS?
On my first Chevy front, I used the stock Chevy mounts, but grind the "top" out of the mounts (if you put a shock in and try to stand it upright the shock body hits the top of the shock mount, which requires some grinding - obvious when you get there). On the second housing, one of the mounts was bent..
I cut the mounts down to half the size (closer to the housing) and still have to redrill for the shock bolts.
Upper mounts are fabricated "hoops", tho' they're rectangular and made of square tubing. :D

Like Scout Dude said.. you missed the Roggy special.
I only bought two of the big long Bilsteins, but they'll be an improvement I'm sure. Probably should've bought a second pair to double 'em up in the front..
Hooper 01-18-2002, 08:50 AM My list is pretty short. I need to repair my full soft top so I can use it again. Need to install my front cage, then add 2 stringers across the top, two side bars, and a dash spreader. Then, do my hub swap. Then, install OBA. (JDJanda, which recipe did you use for yours?)
Not that much.
I might look into replacing my driver front spring. The main is bent a little. (reverse bend interestingly enough)
Brandonw 01-18-2002, 08:52 AM I used a 10 bolt front out of a 3/4 ton Chevy. The pinion angle isnt bad, its just a little steep. I used stock springs and had them rearched 2 inches over. No RS still using stock shackles up front. I thought about using the stock mounts on the front end but I decided to run duals. So i had a hoop fabbed up similiar to you. I think im just gonna cut off the stock mounts and weld the new ones on the tubing.
What is the Roggy Specail:question: Pardon me for being a newbie:flipoff2: :D
Scout Dude 01-18-2002, 08:59 AM Roggy Specials were Bilsteins that Bob Roggy sold cheap for one day only. (they were bilsteins right?)

About how many hours do you have into each 'cage?

Yep. 5100s, IIRC. $53-ish. I have two sitting on the floor just inside the front door at home. :D
$123 to my door.
Regular $75-ish..
14 3/4" travel. Should work fine if I lay 'em down just a bit. ;)

No problem. Allpro sells a weld-in kit for $299.00 that looks pretty good. I may just go ahead and do that.
Good luck with your project!

Right now...none. They are all friends that I have lined up. Are you asking how long it takes? Cause, it is not profittably for me to make cages...This Toy one probably took me 25 hours total..the bumper was about 6 hours...Altough, this is the very first cage work that I have ever done. I expect to get a little faster but I won't compromise the safety of the people that I make them for..so I try to be very exact. The $$ that I charge is just used to buy tools/parts for My Scout.
Here is a link to my Webshots page with the pics: click here (http://community.webshots.com/album/29162261dYppCHBrqq) . I don't have finished pics yet because the owner had to take his truck back to the bay area last Sat and I finished welding it at 10:00 PM. He is going to send me pics of it painted and the rest of the bars that I added (but didn't take pics of).

Dang, but that looks like a lot of work. Should be a pc of cake for me to get the front hoop, spreaders, etc welded in on my SSII :D Got em ordered in today. Should have them next week sometime.

I was just curious about the time to fab up a 'cage.
I'm planning to buy a JD2 before much longer to work on my own stuff.. but I KNOW I'll be asked to "help" some friends..
Just wondering what kind of mess I'm getting myself into.. everyone's already talking about wanting to come over and "borrow" my heated, lighted, equipped shop - before it's even done! :D
Hmmm.. I should make it a policy that only if you helped build it can you help use it.. that would pretty much eliminate.. umm.. everyone. :(

Isn't it funny how you seem to have all kinds of "Friends" that come out of the woodwork when you have something that they really need.
Also, building a Scout cage is not going to be hard at all. The toy cage was on multiple plains.

Hey Tom,
Do you have a little room I can park my rig so I can change my blinker fluid without having to lie on my cold garage floor? It's like 50 degrees in my garage, and that smooth concrete floor is just too cold...... I helped with your garage. I offered constructive ideas about what color to paint the vinyl siding.... :D

Well, you'd want to wait until the heat is in.. which won't happen until after the ceiling is sheetrocked and insulated..
And even then, you could come lie on my warm, heated, 50-deg slab. :D
It's a lot warmer than you think if you first step outside at -20 and then come inside.
I tried my 80k BTU LPG heater the other night.. dunno if it made a difference or not since I still have one side to soffit and a LOT of attic space to suck up my heat. :(
I guess I should take the Travelette and go get the sheetrock soon.. :D

want me to give you a hand today?

DK yet. Gotta put the hoop in and get measurements. I'd like to buy the stringers, dash bar, side bars, etc, precut and fish eyed from my measurements, so I would just need to get them welded in. Couple shops up here can do that kind of stuff.
