: Is my D300 math right?

I am thinking that the D300 would be a nice upgrade for my XJ. However, when all is said and done, an atlas isn't much more money.

D300=PNP $200
HD AA Output= $280
4:1 = $600
Flip Kit = $695
CV Flanges = $200

Total=1975

Is there anything else I am missing? (I'll have to modify my DSs with both the Atlas and the D300, I know that)

I can pick up a new 3.8 Atlas for about 1800ish and a 4.3 for about 2100 ish. Why go with the D300????

This will be hooked up to 4.0, AW4, 35s, 4.56s, 4 wheel disc I will probably just get the 3.8 as I don't want to overdrive my brakes with the Auto and low gearing.

Am I on the right track?>

flip kit? hardened output? why? 300 with 4:1's would be key, atlas is over rated i think! jiMMy

dana 300 at p-n-p? where? those prices are being optomistic. at that point go atlas. why not?;)

i dunno what PnPs you guys are going to, but d300s are about 1 bill down here.

I need a drivers side front output, so the flip kit is necessary.

Why do all that work? I say go buy a 3.8 atlas and bolt it in. Its easier, stronger (with the 300 outout shaft kit), and probably cheaper once its all said and done.

See, now that's what I am thinking but so many folks have a hard-on for the D300 and are telling me that Atlas isn't worth the money. The Atlas has some pretty stout internals from everything that I have read, plus it will be easy to install and clock if necessary.

Thanks

SeanP i didnt know you had to have a drivers drop, id go atlas in your situation then, for me it was cheaper for d300. jimMy

As the owner of a D300, I say go Atlas. It's going to take too much money to make the 300 work for you, and it still won't be as strong.

you are better off with the atlas it has proven strength no rigging it to make drivers side drop/ built in clockability/unlimited yokes

secondly where did you get the $280 price on the AA output upgrade the cheapest i found was $480?

I could be mistaken, but I pulled this number from another thread about the D300. Just makes the D300 route all that more expensive.

atlas, no question.

with all the little things that could go wrong or take alot of time along the way, i say go atlas. plus, you will just end up with an over built 300 that took you a lot of time to get and put together.

since there is not really a price difference here, and you have no actual money invested in the t-case, ATLAS ATLAS ATLAS

From the math presented the it seems the only way the D300 makes sense is if you need to buy it over time and build it up. I've had the same thoughts but I'm not sure I can put $2000 into it all at once.

I figured Buy the 300 and the flip, and Flanges (hadn't thought about the CV flanges, thanks) and run it till the next phase of the 4-1kit and HD output. It's going to take some time to build the XJ to the point where they are needed anyway.

Sure I'd like to do it all at one time but I also like to eat.

Go Atlas. I am going to change out the 300 in my CJ.

The 300 isn't for everyone, but let me clue you in on why it worked for me.

I have a TJ that had a 231. I was at the point where I wanted 4:1's and needed a sye for the 231. 4:1($900-1000)SYE($250) plus 2 wheel lo $200. Total about $1300 if you can get good pricing. SO I checked in to the 300, I picked up a 300 for $25 added flip kit for $700 and the 4:1's for $700. Total about $1400. I figured for the extra ~$100 it would be worth it for the 4" shorter 300 and the extra beef of the gear drives case not to mention twin sticks :). Since I'm only runnin 33's I wasn't really worried about breakin the 231, so it didn't seem to make sense to spend the extra $600 on an Atlas :)

Atlas cases are easy to unload if one has too:smokin:
