: Australian Cruisers and 6.2
b_sulli@yahoo.com 01-17-2002, 01:38 PM So my question to the down under crowd... I noticed that Marks Adapters sells kits to swap the Chevy 6.2 Diesel in to cruisers. Its nearly identical to a big block chevy in size and weight and bolt pattern.
So, my question is this... if you guys have access to Turbo HZ Diesels... why do people bother with the 6.2? Those engines have a less then steller reputation up here (then again, some people swear by them). Is it popular? Are they easy to find? Cheap? What gives?
Anyone?

wngrog 01-17-2002, 02:02 PM They also treat Jeeps like we do Cruisers....rare and special, not dime-a-dozen, their toilets swirl opposite and it is the heat of summer right now.
Looks like everything is bass-ackwards! :p
Tracknod 01-17-2002, 02:02 PM Hey Brain....
Just wanted to say hi and tell you that your old rig is looking SWEET!!! It is at the fabricators right now getting a new full cage. What is it... almost a year and I still haven't driven it :)

Sundance 01-17-2002, 02:21 PM 6.2 and 6.5 litre chev diesels are popular over here with companys specializing in the conversions (Bunswick Diesel is one of them and just up rhe road from me) cost seems to be one of the factors, as the toyota turbo diesels arn't that cheap to come by, Cummins diesels are starting to make a mark on the local scene too.
BJ On Roids 01-17-2002, 04:58 PM wankers... wank factor, the HZ turbo in STANDARD form, develops 6kw less than aV8 chev
but the reliability, and toyota name and parts availability here, should make them popular
its the $$$
$6000 at least for a running engine
thats more than i was prepared to shell out, BUT, if i started again, yeah id do the 1HD-T thing!! FO' SURE!!!
1HD-T is a 1HZ with a factory turbo
the d is for direct injection, it also has multi valve and a few other little tidbits, plus its lighter than the chev
plus i dont treat CHEEPS very well at all, and we are getting heaps more of teh newer ones now!!! those stupid looking wagons and TJs and stuff (am i gunna get flamed for this?) but they are all yuppie shopping vehicles anyways
its the older CJs which are rare, and they mostly have hybrid setups, toy running gear, holden v8s, or range rover stuff, or nissan stuff, and you dont see many at all!!
cruisers are a dime-a-dozen though but thats cause they rule
orangefj45 01-17-2002, 08:30 PM sully! what the hell are you smokin'?!
the 6.2 must be one of the worst engines GM ever used. gutless and useless!!!!
but lucky for us you change your mind like your girlfriends and underwear so we won't be seing a 6.2 diesel powered fj60 any time soon.
:smokin: on bro!!!!!
b_sulli@yahoo.com 01-18-2002, 09:39 AM THe 6.2 is not a great engine... but it would swap right in place of my 305.
The worst engine GM ever used was the Olds 350 Diesel... based on the 455 Gas block. The 6.2 was woefully underpowered in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks... but in a light duty (FJ40/55/60) appilcation, they should be able to produce good power (165 HP with a banks kits) and very good mileage (25 mpg with correct gearing). I'd much rather go with a Cummins 6A3.4T or Isuzu 3DBT... but the cost of engine and adapters is a bit much.
On the other hand, judging from the miles I drive and the cost of fuel in Cali, a Diesel would pay for itself in... less then two years.
b_sulli@yahoo.com 01-18-2002, 09:41 AM oh sorry shane... what's up? Yeah it has been nearly a year i think. And that sweet creampuff of an FJ40 i sent to you (yeah right) is looking good.
But i thought you said it was going to be BIG?

BJ On Roids 01-18-2002, 02:48 PM if you're swapping in a diesel someone on the pbb
is actually doing this
ozrunner organised an engine for this person and he's putting it in a 40:
http://home.attbi.com/~dtay/1HZ_Swap.html
and the green beastie (sausage pumper) on this site:
www.macquarie4x4.com.au
is a modified BJ42 with 1HZ and 5 speed, 42 inch swampers, all cruiser running gear!!
get ozrunner or me to crate ya up a 1HD-T and send over ;)
id love to see that swapped into a 40!!!!!
:rasta:
in fact, sell up, move here, and ill help ya swap it in!!!
b_sulli@yahoo.com 01-18-2002, 03:03 PM yeah, dave will have a nice 40 when he is done. another nice 40 (already has a sweet rock crawler).
I'd love to put a Toy Turbo Diesel in my 45 Wagon project... but by the time it is shipped across the world, I can't imagine that it would be cost efficient.
_But_, a 1-HDT, H55f/splitcase with the 3.08:1 gearste would be a sweet all around truck.
what kind of ballpark are we talking here?

You think you're kidding. Don't tempt me.

1HD-T i wouldnt bolt to the H55F best off just buying the transfer csae and gearbox that came with the 1HD-T cause all the splines are differnet, the bellhousings are different lengths, different clutches
so yeah, MISSION, probly looking at $7500 for the engine tranny and transfer, thats a CHEAP one, but im not sure, could end up being more, i know, i only priced a engine for $6k, but its half that...say $3K US
shipping'll be the killer
MOVE HERE!! im not kidding, ill put a 1HD-T in a 40 for ya!!
Ozrunner 01-19-2002, 07:56 AM BJ40 is close to the mark but for a good low mileage turbo version with trans and a part time transfer fitted (80's have full time) you would have to allow around $US5400. Of course cheaper units can be found but they either have a lot of miles or a checked past. It would not make sense to try and save a few dollars on something that might die, especially when its being shipped halfway around the world, LOL.
For a good low mileage non turbo 1-HZ with a 80 series 5 speed and part time transfer (same as Daves) and other essentail parts you would need to allow around $US3,800.
This 12HT is from this 60 series that is about to be wrecked. Shame as its a nice clean truck. Someone has already grabbed the hood. Anyone want anything from it, LOL. I'm only guessing here but being a 60 series and a turbo I reckon it would also be around $US3800.

b_sulli@yahoo.com 01-19-2002, 02:35 PM are 12HT motors any good? My friend recently drove through central america for 6 months. Along the way, he talked to a couple shops in Guatemala, that would swap a 12HT, h55f, and case... for USD $3000.
The only catch was... he (mny friend) would be responsible for minor stuff like wiring (12V vs 24V?) and fuel lines and driveshafts.
Still, pretty damn good price. Almost makes it worth the 6 or 7 day drive each way.
