welcome to our newest forum, Shop talk ! I have been wanting to add this forum for a long time and now it is here. I have some really cool ideas for this forum as it really goes right to the heart of what this sport means to me.

For me my shop is as much about the lifestyle of wheeling as any rig, I spend more time hanging out in the shop not only building my rig but as a social gathering place of my familys home, it is where we build our rigs, learn our skills as fabricators, mechanics and teach each other our craft. as a kid i fondly remember hanging out in the shop with my dad and his friends watching them build their toys and it was always were they gathered and hung out, I probally bonded more with my father in the gargage then any other place. It is where I learned how to work on things, fix things and do every thing from my first soab box derby car as a cub scout to learning how to change a spark plug. so not only is a shop where we build our rigs but a socail gathering place that many of use have choosen as the focus of our lifestyles.

I hope that together we can make this forum into the same kind of place, where we can exchange information on our shops, our tools, and our skills and together build new friendships.

Well said. I didnt get to share that experince with my Dad, but I am trying to do that with my son, he is almost 2 and he has been in the shop with me since he was 11 months old. My wife doesn't get the garage bonding experience a father and son share out there, but I hope he says the same thing about me that you say about your father. Good Times! Hmmm... maybe need to move the SHED & SHOP construction stuff over here (usually I've posted in Chit Chat).

Little humor... been on the road WAY TOO much to get anything done on the shed. Finally getting it finished up (needs a garage door on the front, finish the shingles). Still the building inspection needs to be done before moving junk into it.

Called the inspection office only to be told "Yes, the inspector signed it off in FEBRUARY!" Huh... I knew someone stopped (neighbor spotted him) and looked that the shed. His comment was "J bolted foundation, hurican ties, 3/4" roof decking... above standard construction and PASSED it without the final work being finished." :bounce2: :bounce:

I've been sweating the details (all 8D nails in the hurrican ties, etc) getting ready and it was already passed. :D

Now only if they will so so easy when it comes to the shop! :D

Excellent idea, and excellent forum -
I think, even with alloy shafts, F&R ARB's, a Novak kit and a bunch of other shite that makes my account cringe (if I had one), I still spent way more on outfitting my shop than I did on my rig. Cool thing is, when ahm done with the rig, I have the tools, capability and experience to do more!

Idea: There have been many good threads with shop-specific content over the years. Perhaps we could have a thread that points to those threads? don't want to waste all that good vintage tech.

I do seem to recall a nice shop-pic thread a while back :cool2: Also that homemade hydro-bender build-up thread . . .

Yes, this is a great idea for a forum. I am building my shop as we speak. I wanted to do a big garage, but the building inspector says I dont have room.
So, on my little lot in the country, I am pouring a concrete driveway that goes into a metal 2 car carport and on the backside of that, I'm building a wooden 10 X 14 shop on a concrete pad. The building inspector can shove it! Looks like this is the best I can do without a hassel. Oh! I am buying tools like mad! I just bought a cutting torch for a good price. It's an old Smith......... Still need a bender and plasma cutter, and cutoff saw.....and on and on. :flipoff2:
I won't have to work on the jeep in the snow this winter! :D

Cool idea there Camo! Been looking at your stuff for a couple years now. Just sold my blown alky mud rail chassis and am takin some time out to do some wheelin. Back halfing an ol' Tota P/U. Got way too much junk in way too small of a shop. Got the usual...mill, lathe, welders, plasma, bender, saws etc. I started out years ago with a cutting torch and a grinder like most of you. This is a good idea...might save someone a few $.

Well put, I loved working in the shop with my dad,it is full machine shop,we made alot $ in there. He passed away last Nov.,I still have shop. I never thought miss him yelling. "Quit working on that damm truck and clean this place up". :beer:
