On my last truck, I had a class 5 hitch. I think it was over kill, but worked great. on my new truck 91 f350 duelly, I need to replace the tow hitch. is a standard class 3 hitch strong enough? I pull a 20' flatbed and 85 CJ-7, so I'm comming in right around 6000 #'s. I don't have a weight distrubiting hitch. I've towed my setup with a class 3 hitch and never an issue. but I got to looking at them and was wondering your thoughts on these:

hitch 1 (https://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10101&langId=-1&catalogId=10614&productId=231038&mediaCode=ZX&appId=386635)

and

hitch 2 (https://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10101&langId=-1&catalogId=10614&productId=189150&mediaCode=ZX&appId=273096)

thanks

If you are getting close to the 6k limit (that is with the w/d setup I believe) you should be ok. It wouldn't hurt to go to a class 4, but they are rated conservatively and your existing hitch should be able to handle it. You should get the w/d setup though.

Nothing exceeds like excess....stick with a class V. It's doubly beneficial for someone who doesn't want to mess with the expense of a weight distribution system. Your truck doesn't care about tongue weight and neither does a Class V. Or, if you want to cowboy, pick up one of the 10,000 pound drop bumpers. Call up John Wall's 4x4 store in Dyersburg, TN and see if he has any Sure-Pulls (Dana Corp) left. I recently picked one up from him for $112 including shipping. Best buy I ever made on a new receiver.

Shaun, get a Class V hitch. You'll be better off in the long run.
I have this one. http://www.torklift.com/super_hitch.htm
It will allow you to run an extension and still tow your present trailer.
That will come in handy if you ever decide to get a camper for the truck.

I got a Putnam class V for my F-250SD. It was not much more than a class 3 or 4, and I dont have ot worry about overloading it.

Your trailer might be fine, but you never know whose trailer you will want to borrow, or rent...

My Putnam was under 150, I dont remember the exact price. Rated to carry up to 15,000 lbs (WD)

IIRC it was about $450.00 installed.
