I'd like to see TALL ones - ie, ones that can go up like 3ft in the air.. :D
Anything higher than say the 6ton HF ones would be a good start!

yes tall ones is what I'm talkin about:D
That would be nice, I just bought the HF 6 tons today. Had to use blocks under them.
Welded angle to the HF specials:
http://www.superford.org/getfile.php?id=127216&toggle=fullsize&f=.jpg
but I also like the idea of just welding them to old wheels.
note the ones in the pic have WAY more extension available, they're only open to like the 2nd notch, but I'm now limited by how high my floor jack can take a vehicle.

No pics, but I went to a friends house who had the regular jack stands welded to a set of 15" steel rims. Very stable and gave the added height to work on lifted trucks.
EDIT: Guess this qualifies as "old wheels" :D

These look go to me. Tall & strong. They belong to Logjam-grant.
Didn't someone make some adjustable stands something like this with some 1" threaded rod?

yup I already seen that, it should get moved here, but since it's not I started one in here. I'm going to build as set like in the pic above:) soon as I find some cheap steel :shaking:

I made some like the ones above but I didnt make them adjustable ....... made four of them tall enough (40") for the suspension to droop and get the axles on and off :)
I was bummed I couldnt take them when I moved to Az from Ca ........ I should have fed Ex'd them .........

father n law was an airplane mechanic and has some super tall jack stands I was thinking of using - but for my needs the tall version of the HF jacks has done great, and for the price not worth breaking out the welder!

Not really a jackstand but a friend built this to work on the under side of his z. I was very skeptical when he told me about it but it was VERY sturdy and the car would not budge

Here is what we use...and they are stout. They work great for holding up frame snouts.

Figured I would bring this back up to add the ones I built.
Base is 2' of 2" pipe with 3 1" supports. 2" .120 inside of that. 1" allthread is supported by some 1 1/4" .120, and a couple small 1 1/2 and 1 3/4" sleeves to keep the allthread centered.
Welded a washer to a nut and another washer to the tube, then welded the bent plate to the top of the allthread.
Welding magnets held the tube in place and square to tack the supports on.
Still have a little left to do, straps to tie the supports together and handles, maybe removable so I can turn it with a wrench if there isn't enough room for the handles. Thinking of threading a bolt into the top of the base piece so I can tighten up the slop. Fully extended, it can move about 2" side to side.
Max height - 58 1/4"
Min height - 25 3/4"

This set is mine, made 8 other sets for guys with tubeframe race car chassis so they could get them up in the air and leveled out good. Mostly made from cutoffs of 1.75"x.120 DOM for the main tube and HREW for the legs. The center piece is 1.5x.250 with an adjustable threaded end. What I really like about them is there is very little play at all so when they're up high it's still hardly any movement side to side.

i think i would use an acme threaded rod instead of a standard thread. i would also make a "t" handle for the nut to make height adjustment easier. i used to use these (http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/wwg/itemDetailsRender.shtml?ItemKey=5C649&BaseItem=5C650) cable reel stands when they were available to me. with the "t" nut and acme thread i could lift the vehicle with the stands alone. they didn't have enough to raise the vehicle off the ground but worked great for leveling. i think the acme thread would be a lot smoother to use than a standard 60* thread.

Yeah, check out the one on the left. Allready has the handles. And it has already lifted a couple rigs off the ground from just turning the handle. Has about 9" of lift from the allthread.

I bought these from a welding supply, but I love 'em. I can lift the front of my heavy chevy by turning the t-handles.
They're called black jacks.
For smaller stuff and axles I use HFs on rockwell drum covers.

the only thing that scares me on this thread is those pics that seabass has on his puter:massey: hey seabass i have some property up in o'vile and i have never seen anybody pimpin threads that smooth, come down to sac and you see that shit all the time. those dumb ass's rollin in their cuttys lifted 6" to clear the 200# 26" triple crome spinin pieces of shits that cost more than most of are rigs. those huggybear wannabee's are:rainbow:

These aree some I pieced together out of scrap in the garage to help with a 60 swap. The 6 tons just didn't go up high enough to grab what I needed. I used a 1 1/4 bolt to allow for small adjustments to get things level. The center is a simple 2 inch receiver and pin. Total in them is about $25 a pair.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p172/rclippard/JackStand.jpg
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p172/rclippard/P1010132.jpg
Now go ahead and bash them and tell me to tie the legs together. I haven't seen a need, my rig is much lighter than 6 tons, and these are way stronger than the 6 tons that I bought. They might get tied together in the future, but it really doesn't need them since each leg has over 8 inches of weld holding them on.
edit: Just measured and they will do 24 collapsed and 34 extended. Next set will be out of round tube, but those are going to have to wait on some other projects to get finished.

Old 14" or 15" stocker passenger car wheels. Center is 2" x 2" x 1/4" tubing (not receiver), inner is a piece of ~1.375 x ~1.375 x 0.120 sign post that has 7/16 holes @ 1.5" OC. Braces are 1" SCH40 pipe.
Top saddle is C3x4.1 cut into 2.5" lengths.

I have a set of 12ton ones from American forge, they sit at 21" and go up to about 36"
Super heavy duty and work great for everything I have used them on.
A bit pricey but well worth it, plan on picking up some more in the future.
Ill take some pics of them tonight

Here's the one I built. The main outter tube is 2x.120 the second center tube is 1.75x.120 and the all thread is 1.5. The legs are 1.5x.120. I like them a lot, BUT on my next set I'm going to go ahead and spend the extra $30 for ACME threaded rod instead of this stuff, its just too much work to move that nut very far. Lift range is 19 to 46 inches.

Digging the adjustables...
Here are mine, they're scrap 4" od 0.25" wall pipe, 3/8" plate for the bottom and gussets, 1/4" for the top. Buddy of mine glued 'em up, those are unfortunately not my welds.
We even did up handles over the CG :D. They weigh a bloody ton, but they're very, very strong...got the idea from a friend with a trucking co, they use a similar design to hold up semis.
They work great...very, very stable.
The pic looks sorta like the shelf is bigger than the base...it's just the camera angle.

A couple of pics of my homemade jack stands. Sorry for the crappy pic quality, my camera is not working and I need to send it back for work.
Larger jackstand has two large railroad tie plates as the base, 2" square tubing as the main tube, 1 1/2" tube inside that with 1 1/8"x5 acme threaded rod inside that. There is 18" of acme thread inside the stand, so there's lots of travel. I used these to lift the truck at the front bumper while doing the high lift conversion on my Toy.

These are used to semi trailers from nose diving when they are being unloaded. The square one will hold 100,000 lbs.
In the trailer shop we had homemade stands, acme thread, round base, round turn handle. The round base was nice because you could roll it around.
I've been thinking of a base for the HF ratcht stands, one that has a bottle jack in it. That would make it adjustable, and if the jack leaks the ratchet pat would keep it from coming down.

About to make some jackstands and have a question. Will 1 1/2" square tube fit into 2"x1/4" square tube? Or will the weld seam on the inside interfere. I know I could use receiver hitch tube with no seam, but probably a little overkill and more $$$. Another option would be 2"x3/16", but I don't like the slop in the fitment.
Also, what wall thickness are you guys using? Would 1/8" be sufficient for the 1 1/2" tube?

made these from $30 in scrap steel and a couple hrs drilling all the holes. the holes in the base are about 2in apart and the ones in the moveable top piece are around 3in apart for more adjustment with keeping alot of metal between the holes.
