: D60 16 to 31 spline?

Looking for a quick fix on my D60. I would like to upgrade the carrier from 16 spline to 30 spline axles. My question is, can I just change the spider gears from a 30 spline carrier and be done with it, or is there more involved than that?

Might be a pain in the ass to find the right length axles, but you can just swap the side gears. Might just be easier to swap the whole housing. Or just weld it, the axle it's self isn't that much weaker.

Are there any carriers that came with 35 spline axles, if so can I swap in the spider gears, and have custom axles made? I'm just looking for a quick fix until I get my spool and lower gears.
Thanks

If your spindles are 1.6" ID you can just slap in new side gears and 35 spline axles. If not, you have to bore them out and then you are good to go.

Asked Gearman the same question last year and he said it wasnt worth it. A 30 breaks when a 16 does. Only upgrade is to go to 35.

I'm in the process of narrowing a FF60 to fit in my YJ. It will end up Semi-float with 9" outers so I can clear 35 spline axles. Replacing the side gears with 35 spline ones is the only change I need to make with this carrier to fit 'em?

Yes.....since you are cutting off the spindles and throwing them away. Swap in some 35 spline side gears and buy some custom axles and you are good to go.

Just a thought, why not start with a semi floater 60. then you just have to get it narrowed. Already has 35 spline axles. Just thinking it would cheaper. Around here to have a housing cut and axles cut is around $175. Then again I'm sure you have the FF60. There fore it wouldn't be cheaper.

also since he is using the 9" ends he can swap the explorer rear disks on it no problem.

Thanks for the input, I got the FF D60 for free, and the 9" housing for $20, so I'm into it for 'bout nothin! I'm going to run CJ-7 front rotors in the rear so I can run a 5 X 5.5 bolt pattern, I'm using pre-78 caddy rear calipers so I can have an e-brake.

yeah get a 35 spline, its the only way to go! a 30 spline is as weak as a D44 axle!
