Project Cherry Outline
Please Read through the list. If you know a part I missed on the list let me know, If you know of a used Part/Donor I am looking for let me know, If you have recommendations as to a brand, Part Number or Something I am Missing please let me know. And Above and Beyond all……….If you know of Sponsor’s that may be interested in helping somehow please Let me know. If you know of a web site that would post this mess let me know. I am building my own site right now But Why try to re-invent when there may be a site that is already known that will post this. I do not profess to be a jeep Cherokee specialist….not even an offroading expert (I have owned mainly chevy trucks until I bought the jeep and I am not going back)
Who I am
Scott Van Den Hout
37 Year old IT manager. Father of 3 Beautiful Girls (15, 16 and 19 years of age) *FEAR*
I started my work Carrier as a certified Mechanic in Michigan specializing in Heavy Service (Engine Transmission and axle rebuilding) for a large Buick/BMW dealership. I also worked for a local shop doing Auto, Truck, and Tractor repair. After becoming an instant father of 3 girls I decided the Auto repair industry just wasn’t paying the bills. I went to work for a large Michigan construction Company as a Iron worker on the welding crew. I became a certified welder at this point. I worked in this field for several years and then took a Fall from a building. I was not hurt bad but I no longer had any interest in heights much less walking steel. I went back to school and became an IT Professional. So there is a brief synopsis of my abilities to accomplish this project,
What I have right now………1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo Purchased Used in 1996 It now has 244,000 Miles on it. With Severe Piston Slap. 3-4 Inches of custom lift using ZJ Front springs and a Add a Leaf rear. Stock 4.0L engine, AW4 transmission, NP231 Transfer case, Dana 30 Front axle and Chrysler 8.25 Rear Axle. 0 Skid plates. Bald 30” Mud Terrains. Notice the Oil Spots………The Great rear Main seal Leak

This is Where we are headed
The Idea here is to build the Everything as complete as possible on the stand to minimize Down time.

Also, check out http://members.tripod.com/BillyXJ/tech.html, he's done a lot of what you're talking about. Only thing I can say is if you are replacing everything, why stick with AW4/231/d30? If you have to replace everything anyway, why not go bigger/better?

Tell Me about it
When the boys show up I get the hunting dog out and start cleaning the rifle..............that usually scares them off

scottv

Well it is like this........Where live there isnt allot of Rocks or stuff like that.........we have a few dunes......Trails (Glorified 2 Tracks).......and some mudd to play in. So the angle I am going with this is that I am building this project with the every day 4 wheeler in my area can afford and justify. True I could go with a 8.8 in the rear (and I still may) get a 44 for the front and custom weld up some control arm mounts......though the 8.8 may be reality around here I doubt most people with an XJ would even concider the 44. Just my reasoning and this is subject to change hense why I posted this long articall.........I want feed back to help me finalize my thought process

Thanks
Scott

What's up with the gearing in your axles? 4.10 in the rear and 4.56 in the front? Just curious. Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you. Good luck.

redruM
01-18-2002, 10:00 AM
three additions to the AW-4 Tranny section

deep pan
remote oil filter for tranny
tranny cooler

Problem with axles

4.10 listed for rear
4.56 listed for front

Tires

go with 33's

Brian
? are you sure you want to dump that much money into a XJ ?

scottv
01-18-2002, 10:10 AM
well seeing I used to be a mechanic I get parts pretty cheap. I only have 500 into the engine so far and thats machine work block pistons and crank and rods already. I like your Idea for the trany I will investigate what is available for the AW4. Also going to look into a RV offroad Torque converter. Sorry I miss typed the gear ratios I think I am going for 4:56's

Po' riggity
01-18-2002, 10:56 AM
Ive only got a couple things to say.. First.. look for a Cherokee D44.. they are bolt in for you. I saw one with 4.56's and a detroit on the FS board a couple days ago... The guy wanted too much money for it though... something like 1000. Second.. DO NOT go with the AZ driveline SYE.. It may look cheap (inexpensive) but thats because it is. I talked to the guys over there in depth about it. Go with one from High Angle Driveline. Jesse builds awesome stuff. Ive got his kit in my yj and have NO complaints..

after all the talks on JU and NAXJA and stuff lately I am leaning toward a AA Kit and having the local Drive Shop (Valley Truck Parts) Build the shaft

redruM
01-18-2002, 11:09 AM
dont pay more than 260 for the SYE kit and then build your own shaft with a front from your XJ

JB, AA is the way to go (replaces the shaft with a 241)

scottv
01-18-2002, 11:12 AM
Thats the Idea
AA SYE
Get a Front Shaft from an XJ take it to the shop. They say they can make it HEavy Duty and all for under $100. They said to get a Shaft from the front mainly for the CV it would save me 50 - 100 That way

scottv

Me too.

Oh yea.. dont waste any time with a Dana 30 front.

Go at least 44.

456 and a Dana 30 the pinion is too small and you cant upgrade any gears in the future.

Go with a 44 and 456's

Unless you get a reverse rotation Dana 44, you really are gaining little by way of strength, the hubs are a little stronger.

A reverse rotation Dana30 is stronger than a standard Dana44. am I wrong???
