: Early Bronco power steering conversion parts question
coyote11 01-18-2002, 01:27 PM Hello all, I have a '79 4x4 ps box and need to get the worm rack gear from a later model 2x4 box as outlined in the BCBroncos conversion. Anyone know if they sell the 2x4 worm rack gear seperately at Ford or Napa, etc..., and if so what is the part number if you have it? Thanks.
welndmn 01-18-2002, 01:43 PM i don't think they sell it seprately anywhere, you will have to just hit up all the pic and pulls
coyote11 01-18-2002, 02:52 PM Yeah that's what I figured, I actually went into Ford with a picture of the part, and the guy checked his microfische and said that the 2x4 and 4x4 use the same boxes, I just thanked him for his help and left. I didn't want to get into a debate, and figured if he doesn't know, I'm not gonna teach him. Thanks for the reply.
smurfsdad 01-18-2002, 06:42 PM when my buddy did his he used the rack out of a 81 4x4, the 2wd boxes we found turned the same as the 79 box
emsoffroad 01-18-2002, 07:33 PM 80-96 F-150, 80-97 F-2/350, 80+ vans, 80-9? rangers, 2 and 4wd all the same D9 box. I have used a 89 4x4 for the swap, also I have an 81 4x2 on my 86 F-350 4x4. Also if you are looking for a housing that will bolt right on to the frame you can also use the scout box. I think you also have to swap the worm as well.
frankellett 01-19-2002, 06:07 AM Dude I guess you can change the rack out, I just used it as is. I like it mounted farther back on the frame , just outside the crossmember, reduces stress on the frame not having it so far forward and I didn't have to drill another hole in the case. I didn't really need to notch the frame just got pissed off trying to locate it by myself in the we mourning hours. I love this box it stronger than the stock early bronco power box. Noticed a big difference turning aired down tires.

4x4x44s 01-26-2002, 06:00 PM This pic looks like a EB but the track bar mount has been changed because the box would be sitting right on it. A lot of EBs have hoops mounted in that location to. I would change the guts in the box and mount it more in the stock location. I knew a guy that did this conversion and did not know about the internals, he mounted the box in the stock location with the pitman arm facing back. He got a big suprise the first time he fired it up to take it for a test drive.

Trak bar mount was changed because I moved the front axle forward 2", I’ve seen this box mounted with the track bar mount intact on a chicks daily driver, I don't get the hoop band wagon since now they mount the shocks behind the spring tower anyway, on most hoops, can't really mount one shock forward of the spring tower if you go tie rod over, wouldn't a post or small hoop behind the spring tower do the same thing and my motto is kind of NO OUT OF THE BOX STUFF, and I also like, I think I may have said seems like less stress on the frame mounted farther back, that guy must have been a little bummed.
I don't think what I did is for the faint of heart, I guess you can always do the internal swap and mount it in the stock location and put a steering box support across to the other side of the frame like the jeeps do.
StoopidMonkey 01-28-2002, 01:13 AM So if i put the 79 F150 box in my bronco the steerings going to be opposite. So i have to switch out the Internals with another box. But which way does the pitman arm face? I want the pitman arm to face rearward like a stock bronco. Can you do that with this box? Im selling my stock setup now and would like to power steering in it, but i dont know what to go with. Anyone have any suggestions?
frankellett 01-28-2002, 03:10 AM If the box you have looks like the one in the picture you do have to change the internals to have the pitman arm face back or the opposite of the one in the picture.
mlogan24 01-28-2002, 07:33 PM I did the 79 4x4x2 conversion. At the time I was swapping in a 5.8 out of a 94 Bronco, and I used the internals out of that Bronco's PS box. I've been told the internals out of any 4wd or 2wd box from 81/82(?) to just a few years ago are all the same.
They're really cheap and plentiful (at least in my area) I paid 40 for mine, and I wouldn't pay much more for one.
The swap is cake. I think Classic Broncos.com has a writeup with good pics in the links section. I just went and got a rebuild kit for the box and replaced the o-rings while I was working on it. You basically just unbolt the worm gear assembly and sector shaft remove each and then re-assemble with the reverse direction worm-gear. I think my profile has my e-mail, so if you need help feel free to e-mail me, and even be willing to take a call and step you through it.
StoopidMonkey 01-29-2002, 10:03 PM Does the 79 F150 4x4 box hang down any lower than the stock box?

No. Here is a shot of another one being installed.
