I am about to buy a fron axle out of a 2000 ford crew cab. It has 456 gears and an air locker. First of all, is this a 50 0r a 60? What are the downfalls of the 95 and up 60's? I know they have ball joints intead of kingpins. Can you get high steer on these? Do they still have 35 spline axles? What is the deal with the plastic hubs? I heard that the new ones even have sealed bearings. This guy wants $1200 for the complete axle. Should I buy it? The locker, gears, and center section are worth that if it has 35 spline inners. Any help would be great.

if it came out of a single rear wheel than it is a 50 and in my opinion worthless as a serious rock axle.

Will the # be stamped into the housing like a 44? I am going to have the guy check. He said it came out of a super duty. Does that make a difference?

If it's a 60 it's worth it...I bot a 60 from a 2000 f450 and it didn't say 60 anywhere on it...It should have 35 sp inners, yes you can put hi-steers on it, yes the wheel brgs. are sealed.
I'm not sure how to tell the difference other than measuring against another known axle. Someone might have the numbers so you can tell easier. There is nothing wrong with these ball joint axles and everyone I know is looking for one.

As camo said. All F250's and F350's (superduty) from 99 and up have a front 50 in the single rear wheel models and a front 60 in the dual rear wheel models.

Supposedly the '02's have gone to 60 fronts on both F350 SRW AND F250's. All the older ones (99-01 SRW) are definitely 50's unless there's been a swap.

One other thing, 50 or 60, if it comes from a '99 or up FSuperDuty, the wheel bolt pattern is 8 on 170mm instead of 8 on 6.5". This is the only vehicle that uses this bolt pattern, so you can't use rims off an older truck - or a Dodge or GM. And if your rear axle doesn't match, that's two spares  You might be able to fix that, but be careful.

Yep, I had to have mine drilled to the std pattern in between the metric holes

If it's a 50, it's 30 spline inners. Basically, a 50 is a 44 with 332 ujoints. Not worth the huge PIA of setting it up to end up with a glorified 44.

Also just to let you know,

The Dana 50 has a 9" ring gear whereas a Dana 60 has a 9-3/4" ring gear. Information you will need later on down the road, so to speak.

I thought that a dana 50 was a dana 44 center section and dana 60 outers??

Thanks for the info. I had a hunch there was something sour about this deal. I totally forgot about the lug pattern change. Looks like this guy got screwed. He traded a set of 21/2 ton military axles for this little gem. Maybe I will offer him $500 and use it for a straight axle conversion on a new chevy. I guess I can offset the stud holes and re-drill to the correct diameter. Thanks again.

My buddie's '01 Crew Cab SRW has a 60 up front.
