Isn't it amazing how even with the internet we're still sitting here waiting for coverage? It's no wonder the magazines don't cover these comps much anymore when we can't even get it quick enough with real time web updates.

Thanks Pirate for all you do. Now how much for a used CIA satalite so we can check it out right now?

Anyone know if it rained Saturday night? We had to leave Jellico around 3 PM Saturday and it was starting to dry out by then. I'm hoping it rained some last night to keep things interesting.

TDW,

UROC East ran a wireless feed (as you know) from the scorer's tent to the entire comp area...it was cool if you had a PDA or laptop...simply access the network and the scores were updated virtually every minute...these guys in the East really have the operation of professional rockcrawls down pat...

Matt broke on the first obstacle while attempting to launch up and over the final rock ledge and was put on the strap to the parking lot. The boys definitely were not in the discussion mode at that time...

The West Coast Boyz absolutely ruled the rocks/dirt of the Jellico...the rigs shined, the driving was outrageous and it was worth the 2300 mile drive...

Thanks for following along throughout the day...

Bring your waders to Jellico heavy rain expecte
Weather forecast for Jellico this coming weekend is calling for heavy rain this Friday and Saturday. Backing this weather channel news is the Farmers Almanac which says the same. I've already replaced my gears with 2.73's for the weekend and put my NP 205 in for the 2.0 to 1 gearing!!!! Lots of wheel speed will be the only way to make any obstacles this weekend. everyone should go ahead and start practicing your "HEY YA'll WATCH THIS SHIT" as you'll need these infamous words to get in the top 10 this weekend

I still would have expected the moon buggies to rule - they are so purpose built & ideal in many ways. But, I would have expected a stronger placing by the east coast guys though... If nothing else, I hope some of the west coast guys have a greater appreciation for the difference in terrain & climate (I'm NOT saying harder, only different) - which was one of the first things mentioned in page 1 of the writeup. The other advantage I see for WC guys is they have SO many places to wheel, and an almost non-existant off-season (as far as wheeling place availability)!

Regardless, kudos to the west coast guys for handing the EC guys their hats in their own backyard, even with wet & humid conditions the first day or two!

I talked to Paul this morning. I guess they broke one of their drive shaft disconnects then the shaft smashed the computer. Tough break. :(

I was down there for Saturdays runnings. Looked long and hard at the Jason Paule rigs, and was quite impressed with the engineering and quality build of those vehicles. And I like Walker Evans little rear mounted moon buggy.

The action on saturday was pretty damn good too, I was quite impressed with a yellow buggy that had BMW grille inserts, it worked well on the rocks and dirt, and I like the driving style, he still showed finesse in his lines and wasn't just a hammer down rock jock IMO.

Got some pictures at home, none of any rolls though. Gotta love this dude from Sat that rolled ass over tin cups twice, landed back rubber side down, thru it back into gear, and launched his shit right back up that hill!

Went down to see Jason Head compete and he did real well on trail #3, made the bonus gate impressively, but alas, he broke his junk after a roll on another trail....

Would have been nice to see some of Sunday runs with the Pro teams. Really would have liked to see a lot more mud on those rocks, with the mud, I think it would have been a different result in the results. There is a definite difference in the buggy architecture from East to West. And I'm not getting into which is better or worse, they are purpose built machines. (but if push came to shove, the west coast rigs have an edge on the technology aspect). But hey, I may get flamed for that, but :flipoff2: it's my opinion.

This was my virgin serious comp event, so I'm still pretty jacked about the lack of respect those folks have for gravity.

I think if you find the time to look closer you'll agree that three good teams finished on top, this time, each of them had mb's. It goes the other way too.

When MB's fill all the top spots all the time it'll probably be because all the top teams are driving them:)

There were only 5 "East" teams running on Sunday, Chris had a bad day but the rest did pretty well. Racin is racin everybody gets there turn, a few teams get it more often. You can find some MB's further down the score sheet too. So rest assured all the trash talking/ bench racin can go on :flipoff2:

I Had a great time. This was by far one the best organized events I've been to. The site was beautiful. There were a ton of volunteers, from the parking lot to the courses. Tech went quickly, Tim had an outline and covered everything at the drivers meeting. There were plenty of well trained and experienced judges and they didn't take any crap from us competitors and they were very consistent. The recovery guys were awesome and very quick. They even had a wrecker that would take your junk all the way back to your trailer for repairs. There were plenty of lined trash cans that were constantly dumped and relined. The toilets were clean all weekend and there were plenty of them spread out all over the event site. There were a couple of ambulances, cops and a medivac. The food was great AND cheap. There was plenty of shade. The courses were bad ass! They had a little bit of everything. Boulder crawling, break overs, hill climbs, crazy drop off's, UNBELIEVABLE bonus' and even some wet rocks on 7 and 8. (at least they were in the morning) Even the spectators were great. They were actually cheering when teams completed the courses and were genuinely concerned when someone rolled. Most had never been to a rock crawl, but they all said they'd be back as did all the competitors I talked to.

This is what I've heard from several of the teams I've spoken to so far. One team even said this event just made "UROC" look bad because all of the competitors got a chance to see how nice an event should be.

I wasn't there this weekend, but my hats off to the east coast crew!

The pictures and videos are all up now (actually the videos are uploading as I type this so maybe give those a couple minutes). Go check them out in the gallery or simply clicking HERE!!! ( http://www.pirate4x4.com/gallery/uroc_jellico2004)

The event was one of the best I have seen. The organization, judging, courses, and so much more were top notch. I was blown away by the scenery of the Tennessee area. Being from the California Bay Area, I am used to concrete jungles unlike the the real live jungle terrain of Jellico. It was so beautiful out there.

The big question I was asked was how does it compare and how do I like the area. The rocks were smaller and there was a lot more dirt. However, the courses were still challenging and required a lot of thinking and skill to make it through them all. Darrell, the course designer, and all his helpers, really made a great set of courses. Not too many cones. Tricky to figure way around cones. Steep, technical, challenging, and not overly silly. The big rocks are limited, but there was so much variety that there didn't have to be all that much. The best comment I heard was down on course #8 from one of the judges(forgot your name, sorry). He had wished that it had rained for Sunday because that is the action he wanted the westerners to see. When it was dry, the courses weren't insane, but as soon as the mud comes up, its all about the throttle. He just wasn't getting his rev limiter fix I guess.

The action was very intense too. The drivers really pushed their buggys/wheelers to the limits on these courses. From Sam's nearly stock CJ-5 on 33 inch tires to Chris Durham in his "I'm not done till the fires out and I have hollywood slid my rig through the finish line" attitude. If you were a fan in front of course #3, you would have witnessed one of the most amazing runs ever. I have a small video clip of part of that run. After flipping the rig over, hydrolocking the engine, refiring the engine after the lock was cleared, catching on fire, down to seconds on the clock, Chris put it in gear, hauled ass and finished with just a few seconds left. I think Chris made several new fans that day. As I said, the action was awesome and definitely a nice change from the pure traction courses.

The people were all very nice as well. I thank everyone, including the owners of the property (Robert Cox and family) for having us there. The locals were happy that we all came out and we were excited to be there. Lucie and I can't wait to head back.

Day 3 and the rewrite of day 1 and 2 should be up in a little bit. Unfortunately we didn't have either Satellite or Cell connection there. Even at the hotel I barely was able to get stuff up. I left pictures loading all night to find that only half of them actually got onto the server. Now that was a slow connection. It was a learning lesson though. I will hopefully have a resolution for this for next time.

Thanks again to everyone for putting on a great show (drivers, spotters, event organizers, judges and of course the volunteers that were just happy helping out. I met so many of you guys and I hope to stay in contact.

Truely an outstanding job, Sam ...
The fact that all of us at home were able to enjoy the next best thing to a front row seat of the action AS IT WAS HAPPENING is a dream come true for Lance (I am sure), and all the rest of us
Your totally enjoyable and informative writing style along with the great pics are unbeatable.
Absolutely the best coverage anywhere, any way.
Congratulations! ... greatly appreciated!

Andy's Crack was the obstacle next to Hardcore with the dirt uphill climb with a small rock ledge to climb at the top. I believe it was Obstacle number 4 maybe. Chrispy's team endoed on it and landed on his tires on the dirt uphill.

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to thank the West Coast guys for coming out and playing in my backyard. Everyone was super nice, I have no idea who all I actually met...there were so many. It was great watching you all on our turf. I must say-you guys and gals are truly spetactular drivers with awesome rigs. I hope everyone enjoyed their stay and would want to come back and play again. I can't wait to get back out in CA and try some of your all's rocks (with no dirt ;))
Also, everyone was super helpful in keeping the comp site clean and made the cleanup throughout and at the end of the day much easier. Thanks so much!!!

It was definitely a pleasure meeting everyone as well. I too met so many people that my head was spinning after the event. I really enjoyed watching the guys from the east on Saturday. It was cool to see different techniques and different rigs.

I also wanted to let you guys know that the Sunday pro information is up with a whole bunch of new pictures in the Gallery. Also, if you are a follower of the point series as well, I made a spreadsheet that tracks the scores of all drivers in the Pro Super Modified series since St. George. I will be making the Modified class one tonight. You can find it in the story or click here:

Pro - Super Modified Point Series Totals (http://www.pirate4x4.com/trailreports/uroc_jellico2004/ScoreSheet.xls)
- Clarification on my spreadsheet. These totals are based on season scores (scores from each course added up), not the points issued from UROC. Those points will be available shortly.

Once again, thanks to everyone for a great time and see you at the next stop.

Sam - it was nice meeting another "old school" Toyota guy that I have *known* for years, but didn't have a clue what you looked like ;)

Just finished reading your Sunday report - awesome writing and some great pics. I saw you running around on Saturday at the event, hustling from course to course to get the scoop and it's obvious it paid off :)
