I've been fighting with this long enough and I admit defeat.
I'm trying to seperate my t-case from my 3-speed.
Haynes manual says....

Fold back the lock washer tab then whilst preventing the transfer input gear from rotating by wedging it with a hardwood block remove the nut from the transmission output shaft. Remove the shaft spacer.

Easier said then done. I can't get the nut off.... it won't budge and what lock washer are they talking about ??? My output shaft nut has no tabs to fold back.

So the question is.. . .. what am I missing ??

My trans out put shaft had a washer on it that had 3 or 4 tabs on it. Basically what it did was go between the nut and the gear and when you torqued the bolt down, you fold the tabs up and this keeps the nut from backing off. Once I folded my tabs down it took A LOT of force, to break that sucker loose. I took the tranny and t-case out all at once, then I put vice grips on the tranny input shat, and put a 4 foot piece of pipe over that (To hold the in put in the place) and then I used a breaker bar and some more leverage to break that POS loose. Good look with that sucker.

Well that means I'm going to have to get another set of hands and some pipe.
I've got a pretty long breaker bar and at 235 lbs I'm not a small amount of weight to throw at it and I can't budge it.

Been there. Done that. Feel your pain.

I finally got it off with an electric impact wrench. Took a big freakin socket too- I think it was 1 and an eighth inch. I guess that could depend on the year. But yeah. Best of luck-

damn, mine came off easy compared to those stories...sicne i was junking the 3speed tranny, i put a plumbers wrench on the input to the tranny to prevent it from spinning when i losened the output that goes through the t-case...the nut wasnt too hard to get off either though. i used some of that penetrating oil tapped it w/ a hammer and got out the breaker bar to pull that s.o.b. lose...good luck

To get the nut off so you could split the tanny and case I got a 4' piece of ~1.5"x1.5" angle iron and drilled two holes in it (at one end)that were spaced to fit over the studs on the PB drum. Stick it on and run some nuts over them and put the angle iron on the ground aimed towards almost parallel with the ground the left(PTO cover on T-case). Now, make sure the nut is not the staked style where part of it is mashed in. Fix that and put the breaker bar aimed to the left as well and go to town... Worked for me, I had to stand on the case to get it to break free.

HTH...

thanks guys.....

Now I know I need to use extreme force and I'm not just entirely brain dead.

If only I had a compressor..... how many times have I said that??

If your still able to put in in gear put a socket and ratchet with breaker bar on it. get it to the point where it is against the frame and put in in gear (make sure your in rev. or forward whatever it maybe) This is what I did and it worked like a champ! Mine wouldnt come off for anything either.

Success!
Thanks again guys.

First try I snapped my longest prybar in half and shattered the handle all over the garage. :flipoff2:
GloNDark's idea of the ViceGrip on the input with a pipe worked.

:D :D :D

SM420 here I come.
