what's the distance below centerline that the D60 hangs?
has anyone swapped in a D60 rear to replace an AMC20? how much lower did the 60 hang?

You really need to invest in one of these bad boys:

Yes, a tape works great. If you need help using it, try the search function.
Seriously though, my Dana60 hangs 6" below the centerline of the axle tubes (prior to shaving). It looks like I will at least be able to trim down to 5 1/8" or maybe 5" after putting it on Weight Watchers ;)

Eric I love you. Dont take that the wrong way I just love you opinion on most things.
Well lets look at this in a scientific way: 20= 8.875 ring gear and a 60=9.75 ring gear so that comes out to just under 1" less clearence.

9.75 minus 8.875 equals .875 then divide that result by 2 and you get .4375". The .4375" is the ring gear diff but the housings might be thicker or thinner. Yeah, just get the tape measure...

i don't have spare D60s lying around to measure, ya fawks! :flipoff2:
thanks for the info, tho.
i can do math, i've already tried the ring gear differences ;) :flipoff2:
my 20 hangs about 5 3/8" below centerline (measured with a drop plumb and a square), so the 60 should probly be pretty close (woohoo!). i think the difference between the two is that the 60s housing is much thicker, but also closer to the ring gear.
now i just have to find a damn 60 for cheap...
I swapped an AMC20 out and replaced it with a D60, 35 spline, 5 on 5-1/2" Mosier Axles,4.88/ARB. It's 58" wide, which is more or less Scout/Waggie/EB width for a rear. I had a homemade skid on the AMC20, so the D60 with no armour has more clearance then my 20. After an extensive build up on the AMC20, I liked it and thought it was superior to a D44.

However, my bro had the D60 he wanted to dump, so.....

J4000 parts truck rambling. Some interesting D60 conversion info.
I had a good day striping the parts truck I bought last month for $400. It is (or becoming was) a '73 J4700, PS, PB, 360/T18a[wide ratio]/D20/D44 (4.09:1) closed knuckle, D60-2 (35 spline, semi floating, 5 on 5.5", 4.10:1) with about 4K miles on an engine rebuild. This rr axle is the rare one with the huge axles/rg&p/bearings, but thinner tubes than the FF, and the 5 on 5.5". I took the D60 rear axle apart and took the housing and both axle shafts to my driveline machinist for narrowing for my son Matt's C104. This has very beefy axle shafts and necks UP after the splines, not down. The problem for a CJ8 or C104 is the width. They're 64.4" wide. We did some measuring and found the pig is offset, and if we just shorten the long side by 5-3/8" inches, it will be the same width as Matt's Scout D44 stock rear axle width, and have a centered pinion output. And, by a wierd coincidence, the longer shaft will be shortened to the same length as the shorter shaft. Only the cold cut and splined shaft will have to be heat treated. Paul, the machinist at Cook's Machine Works in Los Angeles will cut the tube in the middle somewhere and chop the 5-3/8" piece out and sleeve the tube, welding up the ends. This is all done in a jig with a shaft going straight through to keep the bearing surfaces in alignment. He'll also cut the spring pads and shock mount brackets off for reuse. Looks like his machine work will cost about $300. He did my front D44 and it's bulletproof.
I also striped the York AC pump, Warn 6 bolt hubs, 10" wide white wagon wheels, drivehsafts/yokes, and have the T18/D20 loose and ready to pull. I drained the oil in them, and it was very clear, a good sign. I'll pull the front D44 carrier and 4.09:1 gear set out for Matt to use with the 4.10:1, D60 rear gears. the rest of the front D44 goes. He currently has 3.73:1 D44's/Lock Rights, front and rear. This is right at the carrier change for the D44, so he needs the carrier and the gears, and will reinstall the lockright in the front, and is going to a full Detroit for the D60.

The AMC20 under my Jeep now seems to measure about 6 1/4" includeing a 3/16" skid that sits tight against the housing.
The RC60 ont the floor, waiting to go in, only measures about 5 3/4".
Doesn't seem right, but that's what I see. I'd say my measurements are +/- 1/8", so @ worst it looks like clearance will be about the same.

He He He :flipoff2: Thats funny...
Don't forget the axles you are measuring both have different axle tube daimeters... SO if the 60 "only" hangs down 5 3/4 " below axle tube, it could be as bad as an axle that hangs down 6+" with a smaller tube. The amc 20 has what, a 2 3/4" tube?? *most* 60's are 3" tube or bigger. My dodge's 60 front has 3 1/2" tubes!! Just trying to help the comparo be "apples to apples...":D

But if you measure from the center of the axle tube (also the center of the axle shaft) the measurement should be comparable.

The 20 only has a 2 1/2" tube, but I'm measureing from the centerline.
