: Throttle Cable for Backward Quadrajet
Gummi Bear 06-22-2004, 08:05 AM I did a quick search for Q-Jets and Throttle Cables, but didn't turn up the information that I wanted.
Here's the deal:
I got my Q-jet installed, and with some creative work, and lots of colorful words, it is now running. This carb reeks of chevy, with a front fuel inlet, it interferes with the distributor, and of course, nobody has a 90* fitting. (no hardware store or auto parts store in town carries inverted flare fittings, ugh)
My solution - run it backwards. This will put my fuel inlet on the rear, but I now will need a throttle cable that I can loop around to keep things in order. I found one at the O-Reilly's, and it would work perfectly but it was ~$45. I need for this cable to be 3-1/2 or 4' long.
Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone else done this? I know it can be done, I'm looking for some first hand experiences.

BnRGEAR 06-23-2004, 02:17 AM i just recently put a qjet on my 69 eb and found a 90 deg fitting off of a holley 4bbl that was on my shelf fit perfect as for the cable dont know i just adapted the stock linkage and put the carb on normally
BigNorm 06-23-2004, 02:23 AM I ran a Qjet on my 351W with no problems. All I did was add a Ford nipple to snap the linkage onto and it worked fine.
187racing 06-23-2004, 10:43 AM check vans for throttle cables also. They are usually pretty long as they usually go over the engine to the carb
BigNorm 06-24-2004, 12:20 AM Is there any benefit to running a carb backwards other than for linkage issues as described in this thread? I plan on using an autolite 2150 on my 351W

I'll be running mine backwards in the interest of keeping the fuel line from touching the dizzy. Otherwise, it's OK.
Running it backwards supposedly helps the fuel stay in the bowls longer in a climbing situation.
I've already extended my vent line, and I'm not terribly concerned with the performance gains of running it backwards as much as I am interested in the clearance issues.
I have my 2150 sitting on the bench in case this Q-jet turns out to be a flop of an idea. :D
uneaks 08-19-2004, 07:17 PM works better bacwards for offroad.
it's the poor man's fuel injection because it works so well.
Cabl off 90's f-150 works fine.
It is between 3.5 to 4 feet long.
Shoope1 08-19-2004, 08:08 PM How are down hills with it backwards?
78Buford 08-20-2004, 01:09 PM Ford 2100/2150 carbs will definitely reduce top end performance, but their reliability and ability to handle any angle is hard to beat. I've got a 460, and am running a 2bbl 2100 with an adapter. I plan to stick a quadrajet on mine in the future, to see how it stacks up to the 2100 on angles and hills.

No problem at all.

I wasn't impressed with my Qjet. But I've never tried to run it backwards either.

Bringing this back from the dead. Anyone know what engine in a 90's F150?? (or doesn't it matter)?
dittohead 11-08-2005, 08:41 PM I just did this to my EB. I used a lokar universal stainless throttle cable. You cut it to length. For the fuel line, i just made a 90* elbow out of 5/16" steel tubing. Mine runs really well off road. Was super easy to do, and made for a very clean install.

Thanks, which length did end up using, 2 or 3 feet??
bmc69 11-09-2005, 10:52 AM I use Teleflex marine control cables on all my rigs. Heavy duty and pretty cheap.
Gummi Bear 11-09-2005, 02:43 PM Where do you get the fabulous cables?
For the time being, I'm using bicycle brake housing and cable for a throttle cable. It's been working for over a year now, but I'd like to find a real cable.
*edit*
FYI - the Q-jet is by far, the best fuel delivery system I've used to date. It works awesome!
RSwenson 11-09-2005, 07:43 PM Not quite on subject but...
What manifolds are you guys using to put the Q-Jet on your SBF?
This sounds like a great idea.
Gummi Bear 11-09-2005, 08:53 PM I have a Edelbrock Performer 289 intake on my 302. It supposedly makes power at a lower RPM than the others. I have a $20 adapter plate to bolt it up. The adapter plate is readily available at NAPA or whatever your favorite parts store may be, ask for a square to spreadbore adapter. Don't forget to get new gaskets, and make good and sure that they're the right ones, or you'll have problems. There are a lot that 'look' like they'd work, but cause problems. Just double check it all when you put it back together.
One of the cool things about Q-jets is that they are readily available at your auto parts store for pretty cheap. $150 bucks + core (~$50) takes one home. Something off of a mid-late 70's Chevy truck (w/350, no listing for one on a 305, but I'm no Chevy wonk, there may be one) works great. You may luck out and pick one up at a swap meet, or junk yard for cheaper. I like warranties, so I pay extra.
RSwenson 11-09-2005, 09:08 PM Thanks for the info, I think I will give that a try.
What kind of fuel mileage do you get with the Q-Jet?
dittohead 11-09-2005, 09:58 PM I "think" i used the 2 footer. I also used their Qjet mounting bracket kit. For the manifold, im using an edelbrock performer RPM manifold, and an adapter plate. Its pretty tall, but i have about 1.5" body lift so it JUST clears with a dropped base 14" filter. As for mileage, it seems to be about the same as with the old 2bbl, but i also built a much healthier 302 at the same time, and it runs best on 91 octane. I figure on the highway, it is getting around 12-13 MPG. In the city, its alot worse, under 10 for sure. Oh well, at least i can keep up now:)

Where you gettin em and what do they cost??
bmc69 11-10-2005, 05:36 AM There a alot of dealers on the internet. Or Boaters World, West Marine, etc..local marina. Here is just one example of many that they make:http://www.teleflexmorse.com/scripts/PDF/industrial/Cables/AcceleratorCable.pdf
