: Toyota hub heat

I rebuilt one of my knuckles last weekend because it was leaking gear oil from the inner axle seal. I didn't replace the wheel bearings or the steering bearings because they looked okay. I just cleaned them up, repacked with grease and reinstalled.

After test driving it, the spindle feels fairly hot to the touch. How warm are these things supposed to get? I checked the other spindle that I didn't do any work on (wasn't leaking) and it feels about equally hot. Did I not use enough grease during the reassembly and the side that I didn't do is just equally low, or is this heat normal?

sounds pretty normal to me.
you have a lot of heat from your brakes that make the whole area hot.
the hubs just get the heat from the rotors they are hooked to.

Yah its normal but if it keeps lasting and its starts to make noise, then your preload on the bearings couldbe to tight...

Okay thanks. Bit of a dumb question I know, but I'm about to take this thing on a road trip and I needed the peace of mind.
