buying disco

Ok, Guys need your help. I'm looking at a '95 disco, 5 spd, cloth interior, has 150,000 miles excellent condition, except for tranfer case makes terrible noises. The dealer took on trade and is willing to dump it for 4500.00. I'm thinking of selling the fj-62 cruiser and getting this. Would like to set it up with 35's :confused: :emb:

My friend just got a transmission and transfercase from the UK with shipping for $1600. I think it's suppose to have like 8,000 miles on it.
A good used transfercase in the US varies from $200 to $1500.
200 being a smoking deal and ~$800 being a normal good price.

It's likely that the transmission mainshaft has worn splines.
Also that the tcase could use new bearings. If not more

If you're not planning on around $2,000 to fix it then you should probally keep looking.

As for 35's on a disco be prepared for some sort of axle upgrade.

it depends on your use and driving style.

The stock diffs are known for blowing spider gears. If you plan on adding lockers this will fix this problem.

Once lockers are added the rear axles are known to break. Normally if/when this happens it causes the locker to be damaged at the same time(mostly with detroits). So if you put a rear locker in it is advised that you also put in stronger rear axles are the same time.
I personally run(in a D90) front and rear ARB's with 30 spline summers bros rear axles and stock front.
I'm in the process of upgrading the front but haven't quite decided on what to do.
My understanding is that 33" tires require a fair amount of trimming on a disco; 35's requiring alot of trimming.
I'm all for the 35's just want you to be prepared for what you could be getting yourself into.(read $$)
