Hi guys!

First info, my rig, 91 YJ, 6 banger 5 speed ax-15.

I will be doing my clutch and have a leak inside my tranny (internal slave). I read a few posts and they mention that the slave on the tranny is the same as the throw out bearing. I bought the clutch kit, which inlcudes the throw out bearing, clutch, plate, etc. My question is, is the thow out bearing the same thing as the slave, or is there a separate slave? Or am I just confused, and only the AX-15 with external slave have a separate slave and still have the throw-out bearing?

I have not dropped my tranny yet, so I have not seen what is inside. As I mentioned, I have a 91 6 banger with a AX-15 5 speed stock tranny.

Here is a diagram from 4wd.com for Jeeps, so that got me a bit confused since it seems that there is a separate slave on the picture, however I am not sure if that applies to my year Jeep as well :)

I believe in my case, I would not have parts 5 and 6, correct? Of course still have part 2 (Master)

I greatly appreciate your input and any tips.

Thanks,

Gui

I have a 93. the slave IS inside and you're right you shouldn't have 5 and 6 if you did it would be outside your bell housing. The throw out bearing is on the slave and I'm not sure if it even comes off. I had to replace my slave too. It's a spendy little dude.

save some time and take it to a clutch shop.. I had mine done for 450.00 but do not take it to the CLUTCH HOUSE IN CITRUS HEIGHTS they dammaged the hood and fender on my jeep and left a few bolts out
and said thats not thier problem

going to sue

also the master cylinder and slave is best bought in one piece
so you dont have the air leaks at the bleed screw
like I do..

best of luck

Yeah, the throwout bearing and slave are the same unit. Basically, when you look inside your bellhousing, you will see two metal lines going into the back of the unit (which is slid down on the input shaft of the tranny). When you press in the clutch, the fluid is forced through these lines, moving the slave/throwout bearing forward, to push on the clutch fingers, disengaging the clutch.

Guys, thanks for the info. For search purposes, here is some info from Johann as well. He did a pretty sweet write-up on how to convert the AX-15 internal to external slave setup. I am saving for a 4500, or? But if that does not happen soon, I may go in that route in the near future (external slave).

Here is his resonse to my question, and here is the link to his write-up:

"Re: quick question regarding slave on AX-15 with internal slave

Hey Geberhard,

That's a good pic to illustrate the issue. On a pre 95 XJ the set up it would consist of 1,2, & 4 (internal slave/throwout bearing) without that pulley looking thing on the bottom right(which I think is the 95+throwout bearing). There is a special hose that connects the slave/and master w/ a coupling to connect them.

95+ would have #1 but I believe different set up for the different throwout bearing. #5 the external slave,#2 master cyl and a different hose than the pre 95.

So in answer to your question the stock internal slave is a combined part with the throwout bearing. If you had a external slave you would see it on the outside of the bell- driverside- follow the hose from the master to find

If you got a seperate throwout bearing with no plumbing attached to it you have the later or perhaps earlier(peugot) clutch set up. I have not confirmed whether you can use them interchangably. If you have later stuff than you are halfway to the conversion and I would suggest getting a late bell housing and throwout arm and do it right the first time. You may find you don't need a different tranny if you can install the external setup.

Hope that helps

John"
