View Full Version : What's BIG & BLACK & Has 15"s Of Shaft.....??????.... SILICONE NOT INCLUDED
POLY PERFORMANCE BBCS 15" travel monotube nitrogen charged shocks.
Well after a long delay on the manufacturing on these things they are finally IN STOCK & ready to ship------>
THE LOW DOWN-
-A total of 15"s of shock travel.
-High pressure Nitrogen charged mono-tube (with internal floating piston (IFP)) construction that dissipates heat more effectively for increased seal life and durability.
-Degressive piston (both comp & reb sides), valved specifically for rockcrawling.
-Durable powdercoated finish for the best corrosion resistance.
-Nitro Steel shock shafts won’t chip or flake like chrome.
-Polyurethane bushings.
-Polyurethane bottomout bumper with Aumnium bumpcap.
-Welds done with robotic projection welder for accuracy and consistent quality.
-Tube ends are rolled closed for leak-free construction… other brands have tubes that are welded closed.
-Large, 46mm piston for more consistent damping.
-Viton seal and low friction piston rod bearing for long life and no leaks.
We have done alot of testing on the valve codes for this new shock absorber and its performance will reflect it. The shock is IDEAL for those of you running long travel leaf spring suspension setups (especially the Toyota guys). We will be releasing this same shock with an adjusted vlave code for coil spring applications in the near future.
PRICING: $99.99 Each and will be shipped for free for the remainder of July 04'
FYI: A special surprise for the first individual that places an order and is able to guess what BBCS stands for.

I like. I think I just changed my list. Now these are on there. How well should these do under a 5000lb leaf sprung Willys pickup? Weight distribution is fairly even front to rear.

PS.... Wes likes girls...he thinks they are fun to shop with.
We have been receiving quite a few calls about the applications for these shocks which leads us to this general response. These shocks feature rockcrawler valving. This is the same style valving we set all our coilovers up with. Obviously the valving for a coil spring vrs. leaf spring application will be a bit different which is why these shocks will /are available for either application. These shocks perform well on a variety of leaf sprung vehicles, from light tube buggies to fullbodied exocage crawlers.

So how do these compare with say 7100's? What valving is available? Are they owner-rebuildable?
Looks nice!
Jack
The first difference is that they are $70 cheaper.
They are not revalvable because there is no need to revalve them. Pig spent a lot of time tuning these shocks so you wont have to.

2 questions, can they be revalved? And what is the compressed length?
2 questions, can they be revalved? And what is the compressed length?
They cannot be revalved. The valving has been tuned for a variety of leaf sprung rockcrawlers. The compressed length is 21.375 inches.

Jul 13, 2004 7:22 P.M. SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA, US ORIGIN SCAN
Just a hair over 24 hours from when I talked to Dave on the phone to having them on my rig. :smokin:
So far, I'm VERY impressed! They are firmer than the Bilsteins like I'd hoped, but still don't give a harsh ride like Rancho's do. And that's just from some boonie-crashing through the front yard and then hauling ass on the way to work. My truck has much better control than with the Bil's.
I even backed off the rear 9012's one notch and it still handles great. (my rig is a commuter rig) I'm seriously considering replacing the 9012's too (wife may get pissed, but... ). The only reason I have the 9012's in the back is so I can crank them up real stiff for towing and stuff. These shocks seem good enough that I may not need that, and I'm sure they'll ride a ton better too!
I can't wait to actually take them wheeling! :cool2:

A little longer-term update- they don't really seem much different than the Bil's in the smaller bumps, but they seem to have better control/ride on the bigger bumps. The truck settles down quicker.

Thanks for the response, reading the first thread is what piqued my interest in them initially.
I may have missed what makes the valving issue different between the two, but would you mind covering what makes the valve rates different between leaf and coil springs? How come other manufacturers don't discriminate between the two?
Here is a quick reply...
Basically leaf springs naturally have some damping in the form of friction, so less shock damping is required than a coil spring. Other manufacturers specify this as light or medium damping.

That's actually what TRD was talking about. Pigs "BBCS's" are edelbrocks. But with super secret squirrel valving just for us Toy's :)
Any truth to this? Do they still use the intertia valve (IAS)?
I've been thinking about trying the Edelbrocks too, but I don't need the remote res, or the extra cost for it. If these are basically the same, then there's no point in trying Edelbrocks and I can just buy another pair of BBCS.
And if they are Edelbrocks, are you a dealer? I want to buy a set of them (normal OEM length ones) for my wife's DD truck and I'd rather buy them here than from 4wp.
EDIT- ah, just checked the web site again and its been updated since I looked last. Edelbrocks are now on your list. :cool2: (but the Edelbrock page is blank)
GOOD, I've got some questions about the Edelbrocks since you guys actually know what you're talking about instead of just reading what's on the computer (4wp).
Are the "Xtreme Travel" shocks available w/o the reservoir? Price?
Are they available in different lengths (like 12" travel?) ?
What's the price for the "86-95 Toy w/ 3" lift" front shocks?
PM me prices if you want.

Wow, you quoted me from another thread, and I just happened to be reading this one. All I meant by that was that they are 'made' by edelbrock but valved for toyota leafspring / toy axles. And that's just what Ive heard word of mouth specifically from some peeps down in his area at Pismo a few weeks back.
Wasn't trying to mislead anyone...

A few of my friends have bought Edelbrocks through Pig for the tow rigs. All are happy.
Edelbrock has a line called Xtreme IAS which are the same as Xtreme Travel without the Reservoir (whatever) All the same applications are covered.

Edelbrock "universal" shock length info from Dave (PIG):
Travel/Extended length
7", 20.32"
8.1", 22.73"
10", 26.63"
12.2", 31.26"
14.2", 35.46"
Available in soft or medium valving, w/ or w/o reservoir.
As for BBCS being made by Edelbrock, this is basically what he had to say:
Edelbrock makes a LOT of different shocks for a LOT of different companies (he rattled off a handful of names he knew of). The similarities between Edelbrock's "Xtreme" line and BBCS are the tube body and the end loops. Everything else is different, especially the internals, which of course dictate how the shock performs. The Edelbrocks use their own patented valving, and the BBCS use the digressive style valving that Dave spent all that time and effort to tune. He doesn't want people comparing the BBCS to Edelbrocks because they really are very different.
Anyway, Dave was very helpful, and I ordered some Edelbrocks for my wife's daily driver. :D

11-25-2004, 02:26 PM
ok I know that the BBCS aren't yet availible with valving for a coil sprung rig so what shock would you recomend for a coil sprung rig? I thinking along the same price lines as a BBCS or Bilstein 5125 or so, not a super expensive shock. Do the Edelbrock IAS shocks have a valving better suited for a coil'd rig? Thanks :D
If you need something immediatly I would look at fox emulsion shocks or edelbrock IAS.
Coil Spring version is in testing so hold on!

Got mine a few weeks ago, and got them on. After working out mounting issues, I finally got to test them out this weekend. SAAWWEEEEEEET!. I love these things. They ride nice, and I felt alot more stable than usual. WIth rears up front I was getting abou 13" of total travel. On compression at that much travel I was rubbing the shock witht the tire....again.
Anyway, you guys did an excellent job on these shocks. Keep up the good work.

i am intrested in these shocks. i plan to use a ford shock tower and some tabs on top of the axle. i am using 96 bronco leafs and full width chevy. first question is: is it ok to mount the front shocks slightly inward towards the top.
and for those already running these: what is the normal length of shaft showing when parked on flat ground?
oh ya. 4 shipped to 97527

I ended up mounting them vertical because the rear sits so low and I wanted to have enough up travel to rail it at pismo.
Hey, BTW how's that rear suspension holding up? Any complaints or things you'd change?
Back on topic, I'm running 9012's now and like the ability to soften them up for crawling, or making them stiffer for road driving, (very little), or trailering. Where would you say the valving of a BCCS lies in the 1-5 range of the Rancho's?
Doc

I would say that this style of shock is a totally different animal in that is has several stages of dampening......... Give us a ring and we would b happy to explain how the deressive piston works.... or better yet here was a thread awhile back that explains a little bit more.... If anyone has any more indepth tech questions give us a ring as we would be happy to explain more.

OK, so this is my junk crossed up, and you can see with the 9012's I'm not out of shock travel, so I really don't need the extra length of the BCCS. But since they are NOT position sensitive, this shouldn't hinder the valving, right?
And since I have my shocks mounted /\ style, it should have a 0.75:1
motion ratio...right? Is this a problem?
I read the thread, and now understand the theory at least. I wouldn't say I'm ready to work on the Herbst trucks just yet, but at least I understand what they're trying to accomplish.
Thanks,
Doc
Edit: I can't get the pic to post right now so here's the link; http://groups.msn.com/PBBPix/parkeraz105.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=96
These are velocity sensitive.
You will get better results from any shock if you mount them at an angle leaning forwards or backwards instead of leaning in. It will give you better roll stability.
Mounting them at an angle is not a problem but will decrease the effective damping.

Got 'em yesterday, and damn are they long. I mounted them /\ and there is only have about 6" of shaft showing, so I think I'm going to pierce the flatbed and run them pre-runner style. I should be able fab an upper mount right off of the roll cage. (Pic with the old 9012's).

6" of shaft showing is plenty for rockcrawling
OK, thanks. I think I'd still rather have a 1:1 motion ratio, and I don't need to mount them for anti-wrap purposes either, as I have an anti-wrap bar. If you look at the picture, that's about all the up travel I can get before the 38's get into the fenders, so it doesn't make that much difference anyway, but I'd like to be able to use the droop. So once I make the new mounts I'll likely have about 6-7" of shaft showing at static ride height.

TRD/PIG: Both shocks mounted forwards or backwards or one shock forward/one backward (ie: stock toyota configuration)??
I've got Alcans that flex like crazy but also contribute to alot of body roll on sidehills, off camber situations, etc..my doestech shocks are really soft too and dont help...
I think these BBCS might help alleviate this problem somewhat? What do you guys think? I need new shocks anyways and want to re mount my rears to run longer shocks also.
Brian
I would lean them both the same dirrection.
If you mount them near the outside of the rig these will help with body roll.

TRD, why did you switch from coils to leaves on the rear 3link?
Here is mine. It is a copy of your original design, but on an 84 4runner. The rear of my frame was damaged so I bobbed 13 inches and I had no rear hanger left.
http://pics.montypics.com/brewman/2005-03-31/1112334919_imag0034.jpg
I changed it because I wanted more travel. When I bought their were farily stiff coils on it for street performance (it was a DD). I was only interested in trail performance. My buddy convinced me to cut it off one day when we were bored at the machine shop. I never had time to get the quarter eliptic to work correctly. I'm finishing up mounting BBCS coilspring valving coilovers right now. I will be testing them and tuning them to get the valving correct.
What spring rate are you running? I could not get a soft enough spring rate because the rear end is so light. You will probably have better luck.
I'll post updated pics once I'm done (possibly this weekend)
brocbronc

200#. I havent driven it more than off the trailer because it has 4.3 tbi that I cant get to run correctly.
I think mine was 225 or 250 I'd have to look to be sure. Your rig is heavier so that rate will probably work better for you.

Can these be used as a limiting strap as well as a compression bumpstop? (not for pre-running, just crawling and running the logging roads to the trails)
This would all be for a leaf sprung Toy.
Thanks!

Yes, there is an internal extesion bump stop in there that would help at low speed. If you are going high speed you need to run limiting straps...! Version 2.0 has the upgraded jounce bumper. That is the only difference.

Thanks for the info. I'll be ordering a set to replace my 5125 bilsteins early in the new year.
I'll probably run a compression bumpstop just to ba safe for the high speed logging roads, but I'll never get air time so I shouldn't need any limiting straps, so long as slow extensions crawling are okay.

@ 45 degress you are really starting to effect the shocks work angle.... We really recomend nothing more than 15 degrees in any direction otherwise the dampening starts to be compromised. Please call for more info.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is the inside separation required for the mounting tabs? 1/2" hole I assume?
My current shocks look like 1-1/2" but not sure. Please PM or call me (I left a message late today). Thanks!
