Ok so we got a new compressor in our shop/garage (at home where I wok on my truck)
It the everyday 4.5 HP 20 gallon type and it is the kind where the motor shuts off at about 120PSI (just your everyday compressor) well I got the old and it is old one and it’s about 15 gallon but the motor just has a switch to turns it on and off and that it. So the tanks pumps up and gets to about 100PSI and there is this little valve that has a copper tube running from the tank to the valve and then another tube from the valve to the valves on top of the compressor part (this is not the mane air feed from the compressor) it’s also a double piston type. So when it gets to 100PSI the valve goes pop and the compressor just makes a panting noise and then about 80PSI the valve pops and now it is pumping up agene till 100PSI and it starts all over agene so the motor and the compressor is running all the time. My guess is that once up to pressure it holds the intake valve open until 80PSI. So have you ever seen one of these types of compressors before? Well all in all I plan on using it as an OBA system but I’ll have a belt handy and put it on when the truck hits the dirt. No point on having a full tank in the city but I could run it all the time with no problems, Hell we have had the compressor running all day long befor

Does this make any since to you…? It’s hard to describe

Oh and BTW I can change the pressure setting by turning a couple bolts on the little valve

A place I used to work for had a compressor that ran all day long regardless............. there was no holding tank built on to it, They had put 3 15't x 6'w holding tanks throughout the building. Every once in a while the pressure relief would let loose and you had better be holding your ears.

so in other words.................yes

I have a gas pwered ROLAIR compressor that works the same way. In fact i would have to beleive that all the gas powered ones are that way as the engine doesnt shut off. Im not sure how the releif part of it works though as ive never looked at it that close.

are you talking about the compressors that air-brake trucks have? My buddy has one on his rig and it works great. I have a couple of trucks with air brakes and they all use this kind on compressor, they are always running, they just bleed out the excess air. I think they are better compressors than a york, my buddies is a twin piston and it is 12cfm versus the 10-11 york. A twin piston will build up pressure faster also.

Go for it it will work great.

Sorry Chief, no pic.

The gas/diesel powered compressors I've seen they use an unloader valve to free wheel the compressor at a set pressure and reduce engine RPM to idle.

My shop used to have a monster screw type compressor. 'Would run continuously and just unload the motor. I was WAY too big for our use, so it got modified to shut down at full pressure. Piece O' Crap, never worked right; finally replaced by a two stage.

Heavy trucks have some neat compressors, but they're usually heavy and gear drive.:usa:

while it is freewheeling the compressor is actually cooling itself down. it is pumping air wihtout the compression stroke that causes so much heat. our shop had a 2-cylinder compressor that ran like that for years. but when 'maintenence' actually doesn't do maintenence then the oil got to low and Boom.....no more bottom end. now we run a screw-type.

It's just an unloader system. You could hook up a pressure switch to the power supply, or a timer that will shut it off. I work on industrial compressors that will unload for 5 minutes then shut down if there's no demand.
