Is the Ford Dana 50 worth anything? Have an opportunity to buy one for cheap, but is it even worth it? What parts does it use? Are all the inners (carrier, axles, u-joints, knuckles) and outers the same as D44, or are they more along a D60???
Thanks

The shafts are about the same as a d44, I think.

What's it out of? 99+ SD is useless unless you want a 10.50 rear to match. The bolt pattern is metric. 80-97 is going to be TTB.

In new D50's, the outers are D60 but they are sealed non-servicable bearings. You could swap knuckles and outers, I know Dynatrac has a kit but you might be able to pull them out of another axle. The inners start out at 1.5" but then neck down to 1.3" at the splines. The carrier and ring-gear I'm not too sure about but I think the ring gear is 9" (not 8.75" like a 44) and is much thicker. The problems with this axle is bolt pattern 8x170mm and the availabilty of gears your options are:3:73,4:10,4:30,4:56,and 5:38(?).

Yeah I was looking into this the other day as well. I saw a TTB D50 on a late 80's F series truck. The outers looked similar to D60 stuff. Does anyone know for sure whether the outers and out are D60 or some special D50 stuff.

Any help much appreciated.

Tera is making a D50 center section thats shaved? and rotated - they say you can use all Dana44 parts - so I would venture to guess they are pretty much dana 44s with a bigger ring gear. Since Tera is making a center section, I would venture to guess that there may be more ratio options coming. I believe they are all reverse cut too.

if you go to 4wparts to buy your gears for the D50 they sell you D44 Ring & Pinions

If its a 99+ solid D50 then I say it isnt much better than a D44. UNLESS, however you want to fab up a nice lightweight, strong 9"/D60 hybrid. The only problem I see there is the low pinion of the 9". Otherwise it would be a sweet lightweight, strong axle with good clearance to boot.

Whatcha been smokin dude?? Dana 44 and 50 ring and pinions are different. 50's have a 9" ring gear and the 44 is 8.something. Nothing is interchangeable on oem dana 50's and 44's. The terra units are a custom cast pig that allows a 44 r&p to be installed into it.
