: Mini-Spool Q!
Archie_G 01-19-2002, 06:18 AM Riddle me this, Batman. Why does a mini-spool for a 9" cost $30 but the cheapest mini-spool I have found from my D44 is $86 (Randy Ring and Pinion)? Anyone know of somewhere that sells D44 (30 spline) mini-spools for less than $50?
And... don't tell me just to weld it, that is what got me here :D I've stripped all the teeth of my spider gears (the welds didn't let go, the teeth did :D ) So, now its mini-spool time (yes, I am cheap!)
Thanks!

Erik D_lux 01-19-2002, 06:36 AM alot of people use 9' for racing and there is a great demand for them. There are alot fewer people using dana 44 spools. You should weld it :flipoff2: How did you strip jus the teeth if you welded it? You should weld the spider gears and the side gears to the carrier, and the teeth would have nothing to do with it.
Archie_G 01-19-2002, 07:43 AM No, you don't weld the gears to the carrier, thats how you end up breaking the carrier and have to buck up for a full spool for an EXTRA $100 (over a mini-spool). I welded it, broke some teeth, welded it again, broke ALL the teeth :D. Its fun!
Anyone know of a place with cheaper D44 mini spools?

You need to burn some rod, you're obviosly not doing it right, and are the primary reason for the lincoln lockers bad rep. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZ

Hmm thats funny, I welded mine to the carrier and it seams to hold up just fine. Infact I know quite a few that have welded to the carrier and holds up great.
ozarkjeep 01-20-2002, 09:26 AM if the gears could move enough to strip the teeth, they werent welded enough.
Cutter 01-20-2002, 09:32 AM DAMN! That pic looks like something out of a proctology medical book:eek:

Not necessarily, if you are welded tooth to tooth (not to the carrier) and its 'tight' and a tooth lets go (I think the heat weakens the teeth), then you will loose the rest.
Here is what the diff looked like after the first tooth failure and before we welded it up the 2nd time:

I really don't want to ruin the carrier because I want to be able to replace the broken spiders with a lunch box locker or a mini spool and save some money.
But anyway.... do anyone know of a source for cheap (like $50) for a D44 mini spool?
Nobody 01-21-2002, 10:39 AM You need to weld that shit and be done with it. It's going to break again, guaranteed. Besides, new carriers are only $45 new, less if you find one used.
Nate C 01-21-2002, 02:34 PM Erik D and Nobody have it right!!!!
Archie, get over it and WELD it, not that soldering job that was in there. I've welded the sh*t out of em before and they still broke...not enough rod, hehehe. Either way, the stock carrier will break someday....welded, mini-spool, or lunchbox locker. No offense, I know by the experience.
Also plan on regular axle replacement with the welded diff or mini-spool. Stock up now, hhehee.
BTW, looks pretty good there Nobody.
