: Leaks Seals & Fun
FJBen 06-24-2004, 09:19 AM Ok, the time has come...the 2F is leaking more than the Exxon Valdez...
Here are the main culprits I can think of...I'm assuming the easiest way to complete this is to pull the engine.
Rear Main
Oil Pan
Timing Chain Cover
Is there anything else I should be replacing while I'm taking the engine down to do this? I'm not ready for a full rebuild just fixing the leaks...Should I spring for the Toyota gaskets? or just normal Napa ones?
AVS60/40SPLIT 06-24-2004, 09:27 AM do your trans input seal, your right there with your rear main, taking tranfer case out w/trans do those seals also, cheap and easy. when is the cruiser song going to be ready? when and if you do the trans input you will need a gasket for the trans cover.
treerootCO 06-24-2004, 09:32 AM Here is a good one:
Nutley's F was leaking tons of oil, underhood of his 40 was covered. Highway speeds leaked more than around town/wheeling. Got to be such a problem he was buying oil in the gallon size to top it off every now and then. He has one of those F engines that runs better and has more power than any 2F but, with all the oil, it was very sad. After replacing the oil pan, side cover, and valve cover gaskets (rear main awhile back), the F was still leaking badly. Solution....new dipstick. Turns out, all the oil was coming out the dipstick hole. No crankcase pressure, no blowby, just the crank flipping it out the hole. Oil was probably overfull every now and then but the new dipstick fixed it. :D
ken79fj40 06-24-2004, 09:33 AM You should do a clutch while you are there too, also theres supposed to be a rear cam seal that's only accessable with the flywheel off. I would do that one too. Anyone got the napa part number for the front transfercase output seal ? I've gotten the wrong one twice now for my 79.
65SWB45 06-24-2004, 09:45 AM I've had about half a dozen guys come in the shop that had a leak on the timing cover PLATE gasket that seals the timing cover PLATE to the engine block. It's a BIATCH compared to the cover. You've got to remove the rockers, lifters and cam to get the plate off. Like I told tkoonz, only use the OE gasket to fix this or you'll regret it.
dieselcruiserhead 06-24-2004, 09:55 AM Oil cooler is a good location for potential leaks too...
DobberzFJ40 06-24-2004, 10:24 AM Fuel pump could be a culprit too. Check that oil is not coming out of the two weep holes in the bottom of the fuel pump. The seal inside tears and allows oil into the pump and out the weep holes. I rebuilt mine with a $50 kit from CCOT and my leak went away (torn seal inside).

And make sure you don't over tighten the oil fitting that directs oil to the timing gears. Overtighten it and the timing gear backing plate is separated from the block resulting a large oil loss. Then you get the project above to replace the gasket which entails removing a whole bunch of stuff.

Pin Head 06-24-2004, 01:02 PM The cam plug and the oil gallery plug in the head are also notorious sources of leaks on 2Fs.
stran 06-24-2004, 01:08 PM I've got a substantial leak at my timing cover, and hear it's common. Check your bolt lengths carefully- they can actually push the cover away from the gasket if too long. Also, I used to have a wicked leak from my tappet cover.... you may wanna check that too.
my fuel pump had the same problem dobber mentioned- napa hooked me up with an electric pump, and I have to say it's awesome.... the way to go for sure. You can use a chevy fuel pump blockoff plate (~$2) when removing the old pump.
stran 06-24-2004, 01:09 PM awesome, I said "wicked leak"
lol :flipoff2:
Landpimp 06-24-2004, 02:16 PM Just a FYI, I have picked up 2 fuel pumps from the parts store, both we Carters but in the box was a Koysen(sp) which is genuine Toyota, cost $45(includes gaskets) no need to rebuild :) same pump at the dealer was $100..........SAME pump.
also remember than when replacing OEM fuel pumps some need to use longer bolts, this was the case for my 65, the stock bolts are too short for the new pump, so 2 new longer bolts from Toyota are needed.
I have a little oil leak out of the bottom of the dip stick tube.....what the hell can be leaking there? and how to fix?

tornadoalleycruiser 06-24-2004, 02:28 PM Pretty sure the dipstick tube is a pressed in tube. Check the dealer and see if you can just get a new one.. My 64 needs a new dipstick.. Both in the engine and behind the wheel.. Both are a little "Off" :)
Landpimp 06-24-2004, 02:38 PM I was thinking maybe a little o-ring was there or something.
yeah order up a pair of new disticks for behind the wheel........mine reads a full qt low allways.........

FJBen 06-24-2004, 02:55 PM Holy shite...leak central here..are there any that DON'T leak??? Sounds like go to Toyota...order much seals and replace...lol...thanks for the info...i would rather only have to pull this once to fix leaks...next time is full rebuild.
treerootCO 06-24-2004, 07:27 PM Leaking is fine. Notice how no one said busted down on the side of the road like them J**ps :D

Very good point...now treeroot...can't you find me a 2F I can tear down and rebuild for dirt cheap so I can keep driving mine?? :D I know you have the little black book of cruiser numbers...
