: How bad is it

I know how good they are, but I need some honest answers on the weak points of a 1995 LR disco. I have absolutely no experience with LR but have wanted one for years and all I get is the typical BS from unhappy owners and the local dealer telling me the typical dealer BS. I haven't found any reviews that have many happy Rover stories, but the story is the same for GM, Ford, Dodge etc. The unit I am looking at has 60 000 miles, dealer serviced, garaged life and it looks brand new. It is loaded with the exception of dual sun roofs. I intend to throw a couple of inches under it along with some decent rubber and armour/recovery gear for light wheeling and daily commuting. I only expect about 12 MPG out of it. So from the owners who actually use their Disco's what shoul I be looking out for.

Thanks in advance,
Mark.

My wife had a 96 disco. SE7 top of the line. It was pretty much just like the one you described. I am very ashamed ford mo co owns these things. We had trouble out of the brake sensor thingy, window regulator broke, blown head gasket, bad water pump, and various other shit. Ive not got a problem with working on an older vehicle but with these things you cant just go down to the local auto parts store and buy shit for em. You got to go the the dealer and like every other dealer they bend you over and give it to you deep. Oh yeah and the fuel pump also went out. :mad3: And the handeling on curvy roads is nausiating(sp). :barf: It was the worst mistake in buying a vehicle. We finally traded for a suburban. Now off road and in the snow it went like SOB. I took it up some steep muddy hills and it never spun a tire. Same thing in the snow. But I didnt buy it to wheel so it was impractical and to expensive to throw some 1 tons and 39's under it :flipoff2:

Mark - Sounds like you have a pretty realistic view of the vehicle. I've had two '94 Disco's and have put a fair amount of mileage on them and have gotten good service. The '95 models are supposed to have better build quality. When you buy one second hand try to find one that has been dealer serviced. The fast lube places won't check the gear oil in all the places they should. I do all my own work and know my way around them fairly well and find them easier to work on than alot of other vehicles I have owned. Electrical problems can pop up and be a real pain to work out. Check for cooling problems as the radiators tend to get clogged over time. ABS sensors at the hubs will need to be re-seated from time to time but brake pads are a snap to replace. '96 and up have a tendency to build up carbon on the valves which can be expensive to have repaired. The SRS light is for the air-bag system and if the light comes on it can only be reset with Rover type scanner (dealer). Sunroofs leak when the drain tubes get clogged and the have a tendency to come off their tracks. High mileage vehicles will need the suspension bushes replaced. If you live in the rust belt check for rusty sills. Do drive it off-road...with just a few mods it will amaze you where it will go and then be able to commute to work on Monday.

That's what I was looking for, thanks. Looks like I'll own one on Sunday. Any other tips out there??

I just bought a 95 Disco and I love it..Mine has 79k and in my opinion its been very well cared for..But there are a few things to watch for. I put a new battery in mine and the SRS light is now stuck on. The only way to get it off im told is to take it to the stealership. The ABS light stays on for about 10 seconds after start and then goes off. The electrical system is lacking quite a bit,but I read the maual and that helped me out quite a bit. Oh yea be prepared for a saggy headliner mine has been fixed twice. I chose a 95 over a 96 because I heard alot of bad things about the motors and head gaskets in 96. Mine has a 3.9 and I get around 15mpg...Yea it drinks gas but to me its well worth it. I dont have a dealership close to me so I plan on doing alot of the work myself..FYI a guy on ebay carries tons of LR parts and there not to bad on price either. Good Luck!!!
