?
I've a CJ-7 hard top I picked up that doesn't have any glass or rear gate.
What options do I have for a cheap budjet? Do I have to use glass? What about plexiglas?

What about using plexiglas for the rear window like a YJ used glass? That way I don't need to find/buy a gate for it.

And the money is on this question:
How is the glass / plexiglas attached to the hardtop?

I think if you where to use a non glass material your best choice would be to use a product called Lexan, its much stronger than Plexiglas. If broken Plexiglas will shatter into lager jagged chucks that will be dangerous, Lexan is dame near bullet proof and much safer. As for the back window on a YJ hardtop, the glass has holes drilled in it for mounting the hinges, so attaching a piece of Lexan would be very easy, have a look at a YJ top and see for your self.

I don't know that this will be much help but I put just the passenger side door window in my CJ-7 a couple years ago and it was something like 275.00!!! The hardtop and doors are now out in the back shed. Maybe someday I can sell them for what the glass is worth.

The YJ style rear gate for the hard top with plexiglas , now Lexan, is what I was planning on. Even going to use CJ hood hinges to attache it to the hard top. The hinges are the correct size, and fold at a different point, but they are cheap and just need the large holes welded up and a new set drilled.

Now, what about the sides. How would I attach glass or Lexan to it? I just can't see glue holding the hard top windows in at speed.

The side windows could be "glued" in with Sikaflex <sp> or something similar like that, allot of modern cars have the front windshield held in with it. On the YJ hardtop the side windows are glued in unlike a CJ hardtop that have a rubber gasket holding the side glass in. Hope this helps.

Who sells Sikaflex? Can it be used with Laxen?

The hard top is in rough shape, not sure if the rubber gasket would stay in place.

So, is glue the best option? or the orginail gasket?

Anyone have any other ideas.

check with Scott at rockstomper.com about getting speedglass cut to fit. They have a pretty cool video clip of them smackin a windshield made out of the stuff with a 2lb maul and no damage. Definatly the way to go.
